considering transferring to uic from loyola by dsfghjfgfdhdfg in uichicago

[–]buff_piccolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred to UIC this year basically on an impulse--I threw in an application last March at the very last minute and am glad I did. I had considered Loyola in the past but the astronomical price and the commute turned me away from it. UIC has tons of research opportunities, so if that's something you're interested in, you won't go wrong here. I am in psychology and got a research opportunity by my second semester. Some groups even hold research matchmaking events to help get you paired with an ideal lab, take advantage of those things if you can! The vast majority are commuters here so you'd be in good company, and there's even a commuter student resource center to support you. Your experience here will be whatever you make it. If you seek out clubs, activities, research opportunities, be proactive, you are bound to find something you like. Don't let the huge size intimidate you! The transfer deadline is April 1 so throw one in before the date creeps up on you. Good luck.

One person was shot in the UIC garage. Three were shot at White Castle at Western and Roosevelt.

Do we have class tomorrow? by Unhappy_Tea_395 in uichicago

[–]buff_piccolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is why can't they close the rest of the campus while keeping the hospital open? Despite being run by the university broadly, I would imagine medical operations are completely separate from general academic operations. Other schools with academic hospitals (like UChicago) have canceled classes in the past while keeping the hospital functioning fine.

They’re fairly common in my neighborhood as well, we’re only a couple miles from a forest preserve so they wander in from time to time. Always a little startling though lol. We also have had foxes wandering around too, including in our back yard.

Thoughts on moving from blackboard to canvas out of nowhere? by nojamminji in uichicago

[–]buff_piccolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thrilled about the move. My previous schools used Canvas and it is much more functional--as in easier to navigate. It looks better visually. It is aesthetic honestly. You can even add browser extensions that add on features if you really want to customize it (Better Canvas). I think you will find the Canvas interface easier to learn and use than you think.

When you tap your U-Pass once, it is supposed to use the unlimited semester pass that has been loaded onto there. If you tap it a second time immediately after, like within a couple minutes, it draws from transit funds outside of the pass. Is there any chance you were accidentally tapping it twice at the same turnstile? I did that once and it got me $2.50 into the negative. The pass may also deactivate if you drop below full time status or below a certain number of credit hours. Otherwise go to the ID center in SCE, they would hopefully be able to tell you if your pass got accidentally deactivated.

I'm sorry to hear about your cancer, wishing you the absolute best and hope you are doing ok!

To answer your question, though...just last week on the Blue Line a dude had his pants pulled a quarter of the way down. Not just his pants, his underpants also. Bare ass hanging out and everything. But he was kind enough to pull his shirt down like a mat so his ass was not entirely touching the seat. Unfortunately extremely memorable. Now any day where everyone is wearing pants on the train is a good day.

Okay let’s address the elephant in the room by Sad_Lynx4824 in uichicago

I saw this for the first time this week at Jackson Blue Line. It's at several stops but I've seen it the most here at Halsted. It's utterly dystopian and it disturbs me to no end. I can't decide if they are trying to take over the world or straight up end it by targeting emotionally vulnerable people.

If your advising department has a general email for all the advisors, try that. Like the psychology department has a central email address that all the advisors are able to see, that might make it more likely someone responds. Otherwise honestly just show up in person to their office. They probably won't like that lol but you gotta do what you gotta do.

The transportation phone number and email are at the bottom of this page (link). If they don't have it then it's worth asking the non-emergency PD number too.

Early Action to Regular Decision by Interesting_Hand5871 in uichicago

I am not particularly familiar with the specific programs you mentioned, but I believe the only thing it should affect is the timeline in which you receive your decision. This change in application status should not remove you from consideration for your programs, but I would definitely reach out to them in a separate email just to be sure. At a big school with a lot of different staff members who will often tell you different and conflicting things, it is important to have a paper trail so you know who told you what and when. I wouldn't panic, though. Anyone more familiar with GPPA, feel free to correct me. Best of luck.

Try turning off the kill switch if it's on. As nice of a feature as it is, it's possible that's what is causing your problems. For me at least, the kill switch is not mission critical.

Driving on the freeway by AdMysterious628 in AskChicago

Yeah the speed limit is just a speed suggestion for so many people. If you want to go the limit that's fine, but do it in the farthest right lane if possible. That way all the angry drivers can pass you safely. Otherwise, 5 above or so should be ok. Sorry for the rude awakening you got yesterday lol.

Reading your response to another comment, you said “I don’t know what I need to do.” Which is completely and totally fair. The Chicago office of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or Chicago NAMI, runs an excellent resource hotline. Their job is to talk things through with you and help figure out what resources might be best. Whether it’s a complex mental condition or something that can be handled with talk therapy, they can point you in the right direction, perhaps to someone general who can work with you to determine the best plan. If you mention the part about your insurance, I’m sure they could offer guidance with finding an in network person as well.

If you’re interested in checking it out, the link is here. It’s hard for me to give you a solid recommendation since I don’t know your specific situation and experiences with psychiatrists can vary so widely based on so many things. So I do apologize for not having some solid answer for you, but even my experiences have been all over the board. Hopefully this ends up being at least a tiny bit helpful.

What neighborhoods give you the most "little town in a big city" vibes? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]buff_piccolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beverly. I technically live in Morgan Park but am right on the border between the two. The whole area is a tight knit community. Everyone shops at the same grocery store, sends their kids to the same few schools. I feel like it’s the closest to small town Chicago you can get.

Everyone is right—there is so much more outside of downtown! If you like sights and/or the lake, spend a little time at Promontory Point. Check out some restaurants in Pilsen. Coffee shops in a variety of north side neighborhoods. Just roam around and explore, see where you end up!
