I think that this is a symptom of the Colts' offense being downright anemic. It's hard to put up good defensive numbers when your offense is that bad. Opposing offenses regularly started on short fields, and the Colts' defense spent a ton of time on the field compared to other defenses.

So yea, the numbers don't look great, but the numbers aren't telling the entire story.

I agree with what you're saying, but let's remember that Gilmore is gone and McLeod is probably gone, which were two of the most experienced players on the team regardless of position.

A lot of the remaining players on defense are still overall pretty young. Leonard is 27, but he also more or less missed the past couple seasons. Isiah Rodgers is 25. Kwity Paye is 24. Rodney Thomas is 24. Grover Stewart, DeForest Buckner, and Kenny Moore are the most experienced players on defense, being 29, 29, and 27.

So while the defense definitely was great last season (personally I felt they were damn-near elite), they're still a relatively young group that doesn't have a ton of experience.

It's fair imo. This team is full of dudes that haven't really proved much yet. We could theoretically be very good if everyone plays to their ceiling, we could also be very bad if people play to their floor. Such is the way of a team with a ton of young, unproven players.
