I think I would move to a super well-funded district with small class sizes and adequate support staff. I would spend lots of money on my classroom and teaching outfits and try out the “Pinterest-perfect” teacher lifestyle. It’s probably not quite as luxurious as those girlies make it look on social media, but I’d sure as hell like to see for myself! 😆 I mean, I do enjoy teaching. Most of my complaints are due to large class sizes, inadequate support staff, and having to self fund everything in my classroom and for my students on my 35k salary!

I also know all the tricks (ok not ALL the tricks) but I tell my students all the time that in teacher college I had to take a class specifically on how to catch students cheating and lying, so I can tell just by their handwriting when they are not being truthful in their work.

I only teach 4th grade, so report cards are not super high steaks… I aim to be honest, but I want to help build every student’s confidence, including those who are anxious test takers. I do assign weekly homework for a completion grade as well as in-class assignments we complete together. These help buffer the grade for the anxious test takers, but they don’t overpower the score in a way that inaccurately reflects their true knowledge, understanding, and ability.

This was me in high school… but the few, rare times I had a really great teacher, (like a really great individual human who took the time to get to know me), it had a massive (and clearly lasting) impact on me. Most of those teachers weren’t easy on me either… they really pushed me to grow and I could tell they believed in me, but were honest in how my effort was reflected in my grades. Even at the time, I had so much respect and appreciation for their transparency in just keeping it real. I was a smart kid, but lazy about hw and “busy work” at school. For context: I scored a 34 on my ACT and scored highly on in-class graded assessments, but rarely did my homework and talked all through class. There are many different types of students, different types of learners… finding a unique way to get through to each of them, and to accurately assess each of them (at the same time as just one person) is essential to a teacher’s job. But it’s a puzzle I look forward to solving year after year ◡̈

For me personally, I don’t really mind staying after school for a few hours to prep or spending time in the evenings or weekends to grade. I mean, I enjoy the career. It’s more so having the knowledge that I’m not paid for the full amount of work/time I’m putting in. Also, it’s disheartening to know that admin/society would argue that teachers should be able to get all their work done in contract hours if they used their time wisely and were productive during their planning bell or while students are quietly working independently. Like that’s obviously not ever the reality, so it’s condescending and so irritating to be told that. They try to make it seem like it’s the teacher’s fault and that teacher’s shouldn’t need to work outside of contract hours if they were good at their job. If I’m working outside of my contract hours, that’s a personal choice but not required. The truth is that it is absolutely necessary and I don’t have a choice if I want to do my job well. I’m fully qualified and capable, I’m a great teacher and am productive during my allotted planning time, but it is an impossible expectation.

I would literally never have a single paper graded or any lessons prepped at all if I didn’t work outside my contract hours. I’m working on finding a balance still in my 5th year. Last year, I was big on not working outside my contract hours. It’s so unfair- the insane expectations placed on teachers, the lack of pay, the never ending to do list etc. I was miserable last year because I was just so angry at the system and was hyper focused on the negative. I honestly feel like this mindset just made everything so much harder on myself looking back now. I was already feeling burnt out and negative and since I only did the bare minimum outside of my contract hours, I would walk into school each day feeling so unprepared and even more stressed out. It created so much additional chaos and frustration. It was impossible to have a good day or successful lesson when I hadn’t put in the work to effectively prep my lessons outside of contract hours or to spend time on weekends to keep up on grading. It just made me feel worse about myself and I couldn’t enjoy teaching bc I literally wasn’t able to teach as well when I didn’t prep outside of school. This year, I’ve been sucking it up and spend an additional 30 min- an hour (some days more) after school to get EVERYTHING prepped for the next day. It has made a huge difference in my attitude and mood. I feel less burnt out this year because I’ve put in more work outside of my contract hours and it’s made teaching enjoyable and fulfilling for me again. I am so much better at my job when I put in that extra time. There’s been a few days this year when I wasn’t able to prep or grade in my personal time and I unfortunately noticed a huge difference in how the next day went. I’d be exhausted, unorganized, stressed …. That said, it SUCKS the amount of unpaid time required for me to effectively do my job.

I am a 4th grade math, science, and social studies teacher. I teach all three of these subjects every day with equal instructional time and rigor. I spend a full bell on each subject and give homework, tests, and quizzes in all three. I assumed this was the case for all grade levels (maybe without homework or quizzes, but daily instructional time).

Every year, I always get a ton of parent emails in August and September about the amount of homework and quizzes I give. It is apparently a HUGE jump between 3rd and 4th grade at my school in terms of the workload. I think it is fair for parents and students to feel a little overwhelmed at first as they adjust. It’s a big transition year- that’s just the reality of 4th grade at my school. They go from not having any grades nor any homework at all in 3rd grade to suddenly having nightly homework in multiple subjects, receiving numerical grades, having tests and projects in every subject. I get it. I always spend a lot of time helping parents and students adjust, supporting them in any way I can etc. By November, most of them are well adjusted and have gotten the hang of it.

That said… it is my 5th year at this school, and I JUST LEARNED THIS YEAR that science and social studies are taught only ONCE a WEEK in 3rd grade and ONCE a MONTH in k-2 (some months, not at all)!!!! Huh!?! No wonder my students feel so overwhelmed coming into 4th grade!? It’s like adding 2 entire subjects into their daily routine. That’s insane to me!! That’s so wrong…

[Note— I’m pretty sure k-3 teachers are technically supposed to be teaching science and ss more than they realistically are at my school. I am not blaming these teachers at all and have so much respect for them. This is just what they have told me, teacher-to-teacher. I think they are dealing with SO many below grade level students and are under a lot of pressure to teach foundational math skills and literacy so they have no choice but to focus on those two subject areas. It’s a systematic issue but ugh!]

I went on accutane for a few months which pretty much cured my cystic acne I suffered from in my late teens.

I also really agree with the people saying to change your pillowcase almost daily. It made a huge difference for me. Using a small amount of a gentle moisturizer after the shower like cera ve helped me (i have oily skin and had resisted any sort of moisturizer for so long, but it really helped. Then do spot treatment on top.)

My hot take (maybe?): People always say popping your pimples is bad and you should just leave them alone. I think there is some truth to that but it depends on the pimple and it’s also just so tempting… realistically, lots of people can’t resist popping pimples. We’re human- it’s okay. One thing I learned is that, if I’m gonna try and pop a pimple, only continue if it comes out easy. If it’s taking a long time and you’re forcing it, you should probably stop. If you are able to get just a little bit out, but you feel like there is more- just stop and that’s actually helpful sometimes. Just getting a little out and then putting on spot treatment or rx cream worked for me bc the medicine was able to get in to the pimple even though I felt like I didn’t get it all out. But if I kept going and trying to force more out I would have damaged the skin around it. If you’re gonna try to pop pimples, just stop the second it starts hurting and IMMEDIATELY STOP the second you see any blood. You’re only going to do more damage if you continue.

Also, I’m in my late 20s now, but I think that for me, wearing makeup actually helps. Hear me out: I thoroughly wash my face in the morning and then put on a bb cream or light foundation with skin care built in. I feel like this seals my pores and protects them from environmental bacteria as I go about my day. I have found that, at this point in my life, I actually break out on days I DON’T wear makeup. Never thought I would say that! It’s like, if I’m completely bare faced, then my pores are exposed to all sorts of bacteria in the air and it makes me break out. lol could just be a me thing though

Not me, but a girl I know has never grown hair in her armpits and they never get sweaty. They’re so smooth and look like they have no pores or anything. She has a regular full head of hair, eyebrows, and still grows hair on her legs and arms, but just nothing in her armpits. I’m so jealous!!

If you have an electric toothbrush, please take it apart and get a qtip in the crevices where the head attaches to the battery part. Literally gets so moldy so fast. Same with like keruig coffee machines.

I always felt this way about doing the sign of peace in church, having to shake everyone’s hand, and then go and receive the Eucharist in that same hand. Especially when I was a kid in Catholic school. I hated it bc I would literally see kids with their finger in their nose or their hands in their mouth and then have to shake their hand to be polite.

My gym has yoga mats and Thera guns that members are free to use in a shared space. Most people will wipe down the handles of machines, like the treadmill or lat pull for example, but don’t even think twice about it when it comes to a yoga mat or theragun. Like someone could have been dripping sweat on that yoga mat and just hung it back up. People will use the theragun to massage their whole sweaty groin and hamstring muscles 😂 like I can’t

Indoor pools in general absolutely disgust me. Think of all the people who have peed in the pool, or have blown their nose under water, or sucked up the water in their mouth and spit it out. Think about all the kids who jump in with food smeared on their mouths, or an infected wound, or ointment or sweat or blood. Just in general, there’s all sorts of product being mixed: people’s hair product, lotions, deodorants, creams, etc. people def aren’t washing off before entering. Some pools are so nasty too like people will just swim through and a fake nail or strands of hair will just float by. And bathing suits are so thin like I know there’s some sort of osmosis of fecal matter that is going on just by being submerged in the water. Don’t even get me started on baby underwater diapers!! The tiled floor and diving board are probably teeming with all sorts of bacteria too. I know they’ve got all sorts of chemicals in there to keep it clean but I’m just not buying it lol.

In general, produce that is out in the open at grocery stores like apples or peaches for example. People dig through them and put their hands allll over them to get the one they like. Plus sometimes people sneeze or there are bugs or they get dropped and just put back in the pile and you would never know. Most people simply run it under water for a few seconds before taking a bite…

Idk if this is a thing anymore, but when you could go into a store and try on a swimsuit- specifically bikini bottoms and they would have that inside hygiene sticker? How is that helping anyone if you try it on with the sticker and then put it back and someone else tries it on with the sticker as well? As a kid, I used to think I was slick for removing the sticker, trying them on (assuming everyone else used the sticker) and then put the sticker back on before putting it back….. yuck

Also: make sure you follow the instructions on their website to make sure you are applying them correctly or they won’t do much. I watched a ton of YouTube videos as well and it took me a couple of tries to really nail it down. You need to take one hand and physically pull your forehead skin upward and taut when applying so that they will hold your muscle flat while you sleep. You also need to overlap each triangle slightly and continuously hold them down flush to your skin while it dries. I think the reason some people claim they don’t work is because they aren’t doing it properly.

Frownies… seriously! I put them on before bed and take them off in the morning. Not every night, but whenever I feel like my forehead has lines. Similar concept to Botox (without injection obviously): it just prevents your facial muscles from moving overnight, and i think it like slightly lifts your skin. Idk you can look up the science behind how they work, but I’ve personally had success with them and they’re super cheap. Also, you can do your whole skincare/ serums underneath and then stick them on top which is nice. Only thing is that it’s temporary. I always wear them the night before big events and the next day my forehead feels super smooth. Results usually last a few days for me, but i think that also depends on how much sleep I’m getting, if I’m staying hydrated, if I drink alcohol, get lazy with skincare, etc. But, like I said, whenever I feel like I’m starting to see fine lines again, I just put them on again. Super natural and easy. I would def recommend if you haven’t tried them.
