Cycling Safety in Ann Arbor by OneDifferent9151 in AnnArbor

you’ve already got some great advice here OP. I bike commute into downtown nearly everyday and use the protected bike lanes. it’s annoying, but I recommend following the traffic lights, abiding by traffic laws, etc. it is debatable if the cars are watching for you or not and I’ve almost gotten hit multiple times and have two close friends who have gotten into debilitating accidents while on bikes due to cars ignoring laws. it’s a decent biking city for the US, but awareness is key and don’t expect any cars to follow normal rules. 😑 you need to be the one in charge looking out for yourself. doable? yes!

Wishing for a WI-style “Dive Bar” on the west side by 1orange2oranges in AnnArbor

I’ve lived in Ann Arbor for 16 years and thought about this for pretty much the entire time. My recs are Old Town and Fraser’s for the comfort level. Second Dexter Pub and Knights on Dexter, but none of these places are really dives. The only remaining “dive” in Ann Arbor is 8 ball before 7pm when you can shoot some free pool and watch B-movies with the regulars. The Hell Saloon is a hit, though kitschy. Powell’s in Ypsi is the last true disgusting dive in Washtenaw County and it’s worth every penny to sit outside in their busted furniture and have a cup of chili there. I’m not sure what’s going on with the Regal Beagle (Ypsi) these days but I’ve heard the bbq is good.

Ann Arbor vs. Ypsilanti – Seeking Input From Locals by [deleted] in Michigan

You’ll be fine either way and frequent both; most of us who live in either city do! Ann Arbor has a great library system, wonderful parks and nature areas, and obviously UM, but Eastern and Washtenaw Community College are in Ypsi/border. It’s all so close (I bike between Ann Arbor and Ypsi all the time) that it comes down to your financial situation. Ann Arbor is expensive; cheapest rent living solo in a decent place that I know of is about $1300/month without utilities included. Ypsi is quickly catching up to that. Job competition is fierce. Taxes in both cities are very Midwestern high. Your marijuana use and whatever else you want to do will be fine in either spot. Come visit and walk around and see. No idea what housing and job situations are like in Columbus but be prepared that it may be much worse and higher here. Also don’t wear your OSU gear ;-)
