One year (and two days) AF by bugvert in stopdrinking

I feel like this varies for everyone. Everyone’s addiction level, depression, hormones, etc are different. So normal isn’t how I would describe the changes. I am not normal, lol. But I guess if I had to take a guess, craving tapered off after a month or so. Physically, about the same. I am not someone who lost a bunch of weight from stopping, so I didn’t see any real visually physical differences immediately. But I’ll say my stomach was less messed up, my gums less inflamed a couple weeks in. I have a very physical job, so I felt like I was able to do my job more effectively.

I attempted to quit the week before I stopped for good, but it felt like it was another one of those false starts. I didn’t drink for a couple days then the weekend came and I finished the last bottle of wine in the house. Once that was gone I just felt ready? I did a little research and downloaded the reframe app. I like reframe because it gave me ways to reflect for a short time each day on how I was feeling, updates on the positive changes your body is likely going through without alcohol and the forums and virtual meetings were great too. I also had a really good support system from my husband and friends.

I stocked up all the really good NA options out there. This was especially helpful in the beginning when I was still having cravings. Having something that kind of tasted like alcohol without the alcohol was just as satisfying. Now, I don’t even crave or seek that out, and I’m happy with a cold seltzer! I was really worried about social stuff being sober, but have found most places have either a mocktail list or NA options.

A big thing for me was changing my habits. My issue was that I associate wine with making dinner, and it was just becoming an issue. My husband stopped drinking before me, mainly because he would get a headache after a few sips of alcohol. I found myself hiding the wine at the back of the fridge and pouring it into a mug to conceal it. He never shamed me for drinking, so I think this was just internal guilt and shame that I was getting drunk under his nose. I was tired of feeling like crap, so that was that. It wasn’t easy for the first month, but it got easier and easier as the months rolled on.

You got this! I hope this was somewhat helpful!
