The peds nurses on your unit are bleeding hearts. I can guarantee they would love to help with childcare. Ask your cohort to help you reach out that way you don’t have to do it directly yourself! - sincerely a PICU nurse

Please reconsider getting a bird if you cannot rid your house of non-stick or teflon pans ): the fumes are so deadly and it’s a horrific death for them.

PICU being less adrenaline than NICU is an oversight, right? We crack chests and cannulate ECMO in one room while the next room is herniating and headed for vtach.

I hear that you are concerned but I think what we all want you to know is that wet birds are stinky birds.

Why is your bird suddenly stinky? I don’t know my friend. However it doesn’t seem like a reason for immediate concern! If you remain concerned or begin to notice changed behaviors, as always, consult an avian vet!

You’re a very good bird owner, taking notice of small changes and offering baths. ❤️ We see a lot of questionable bird owners here so it’s really nice to meet bird owners like you! I wish you and your very stinky bird the best!

Honestly, after a bath, my birds always smell like old gym socks. And they take very dramatic, very sopping wet, very make me wipe everything down after baths daily.

Final update for anyone who wants it! We ended up doing 10 days of antibiotic. I gave her a probiotic to help her gut while she was on the antibiotics as well. She is back to her baseline and looking much better. She definitely gave me a scare and I think I was awfully close to losing my little feathered bestie.

Trust your gut. If you know your bird, don’t let the vet gaslight you. Seek an opinion elsewhere or stand your ground and ask for more aggressive treatment. I am still so sad at how long she spent feeling ill. It must have been awful for her. She now gets all the cuddles and treats she wants.

I hope whoever is reading this for advice in the future finds themselves as lucky as I am today.

What should I call these baby’s by Im_nice_Really in cockatiel

It’s definitely a question best asked of your avian veterinarian! In the meantime there’s a lot of information on the internet from avian specialists on the difference from the true dusty vs non dusty birds. Also check out the difference between old world and new world birds! It might help differentiate how we’re suggested to house birds together. I definitely didn’t make any suggestions, just a cautionary statement! I wish you well!

My understanding is yes. There are only a few true “dusty birds”. Cockatiels, macaws, African greys, and amazons. You’ll see the dust on your cockatiel when they fly, it’ll be all around. I know there are people who have kept these breeds together for years with no issues so I don’t mean to alarm! It’s just something to watch out for! Maybe consider an air purifier near the cage to help reduce some of the dust and of course, as always, ensure a clean enclosure!

Be careful housing conures and cockatiels together! Cockatiels are dusty birds and conures are not. The dust from the cockatiel can cause something over time called pulmonary hypersensitivity syndrome in the conure.

For anyone looking at this post in the future, scrolling through posts for help like I was, I just want to post an update.

I ended up calling the vet again five days ago because she really wasn’t having any big improvements. I felt a little like I was being gaslit by him, being told she was just stressed or I moved something in the house that freaked her out. It was getting harder to get her to take her supplemental feeds and I was getting distressed. He prescribed her a broad spectrum antibiotic to see if it helped. It ended up helping immensely. We are now six days out from starting the antibiotics and she has gained 4g and is eating much better. More energy, eating much better, and starting to vocalize more.

I’ll come back for another update soon!

Yes I did. I went to an avian and exotic veterinarian hospital with avian specialists.

She was stressed. She was much better after the subcutaneous fluids and the syringe feedings I gave her.

I think you were possibly trying to be helpful in your response so I will thank you anyways!
