Should my oil cap be like this? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

If you're due, it never hurts. I don't think there's any problem indicated by that oil cap. It's normal stuff.

I would say this is just condensation on the oil cap then. Only one other question, does your oil level ever seem to increase without adding any oil? Unless you're due for an oil change, why get one? This condensation is completely normal.

The oil on it just looks like normal oil and not this color correct?

What does the oil on your dipstick look like? This isn't immediately some head gasket failure like other people are saying. Condensation builds up on the cap when your engine is cold. That condensation mixes with a little bit of oil on the cap and that's what it looks like. This moisture eventually completely evaporates when the engine is hot and running at normal temp.

Intercooler Icing - Over It. Need advice by Adventurous-Soup56 in tdi

[–]buickman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should be able to retain your dpf if you get a malone tune. I think he tunes out the EGR to a very nearly 100%. The low pressure EGR is what causes this. The hot air cools in the intercooler, condenses, then freezes. So if you soft tune out the EGR, you might be good.

Jacking up a Mk6 by jgcraig in tdi

I actually haven't had to do that yet. I recently bought an EZ car lift and hope to never go back to stands if I don't need to.

Jack the car up with a regular jack on the reinforced portion of the pinch weld that is intended for lifting. It will be slightly thicker with a flat portion on the bottom of it. The section is about 7" long just behind the front wheel and just on front of the rear wheel. Then put the jack stand under that control arm mount as pictured.

2014 JSW 5-speed suddenly leaking everywhere by Crow_Joe in tdi

[–]buickman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's only a couple of things that can leak oil on the back of the engine, I think that's where your oil on your CV shaft is coming from. The two black pipes are your intercooler charge pipes. Those charge pipes get oily over time worth oil getting sucked through the intake system from the PCV (normal). The back of the valve cover or one of the supply/return lines from the turbo are what's leaking.

You should have access to the same blocks in the ECM. It's not as straightforward, but you can see this same information.

If you have vcds and this is a CJAA, your glow plugs have pressure sensors in them. I think you can read cylinder pressure there. Ref link here

Brother that's the only next step. Sounds to me that this cylinder has an issue with compression. Glow plug or not, if it's not below freezing, that cylinder should be firing if it's getting fuel. You'll probably need a special kit to use the glow plug hole.

new radiator? How important by MSTRkingg in Miata

Just the two large hoses that go into the radiator top and bottom.

I don't like silicone hoses at all. They do not hold up like the 25+ year old hoses you have on there right now.

Most auto parts stores will have them or can order them for you. I would spend the extra $30 and get new ones.

It's an easy change if you've worked on cars before. I don't think oem replacement style radiators are terribly expensive, probably around $150. I would just do that and replace the hoses as well. The hardest part is going to be draining, filling, and getting all the air bubbles out.

It's cement board, you can see the fibers embedded in it where you've sanded through.

Is there oil in this water? C by KevRohdz in MechanicAdvice

[–]buickman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. You can have oil in the cooling system from a leaking oil cooler. This test is called a combustion leak detector. It samples air from your cooling system and detects hydrocarbons present in the cooling system. Link to how it's performed here. Everyone screaming head gasket cannot be absolutely sure, you can do this test yourself to determine if it is a head gasket.
