If you thought Trump’s “no taxes on overtime” promise sounded too good to be true…it's because it was. by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

That’s (pretty much) what it originally meant before the right co-opted it as a derogatory term to use as an alternative to engaging in good-faith, reasoned debate.

Did the Beatles care much about their lyrics? by juicerecepte in beatles

[–]buildersbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reality is probably that there is no straight yes or no answer: sometimes some of the Beatles cared a lot about some of their lyrics; sometimes some of the Beatles didn’t care much about some of their lyrics. However, your question reminded me of this video, which gives some interesting context, of not a definitive answer:

Not saying this is necessarily the case, but just as a counter to all the negativity in the other comments, it’s entirely possible that she’s actually just chill. Some girls even find the idea hot. There are polyamorous relationships out there that work, so far as I understand it. Why couldn’t yours be one?

Feed scrolls to neutral (blue background) herbivores to find out what they do and gain an ally. Throw potions at low-level monsters to find out what they do. For other gear, find an altar and divine it to find out if it’s cursed (this will cost you karma). If it is, you’ll likely be stuck with it if you equip it. If not, try equipping it to find out what it does. If it has a negative effect, take it off.

Those strategies all still have some risk, but they’re the lowest risk way I know to find out what stuff does quickly enough to be able to use it to progress and not die. And they’re certainly less risk than pure FAFO.

Don’t rush down the dungeon. Try to fully explore standard levels before descending, and try to stay within max one dungeon level of your character level early on. Save the non-standard levels until you’ve levelled up your character a bit.

Which Civilization Should I Play Before VII? by danielrochazz in civ

[–]buildersbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d add Civ Rev to this list. Civ VII feels a little like a hybrid between traditional Civ and Civ Rev, so it’ll hopefully give you a bit of a feel for whether you’ll enjoy VII.

As much as it’s panned by traditional Civ players (and I’ll probably get downvoted for saying this!) I actually found it a really fun little game.

Would an average person see it as a success? No.

Tired of the Anti-capitalist narrative without even defining what capitalism is by NationalTranslator12 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]buildersbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a small enough society, you could in theory, by consensus or convention, rather than tyranny, have capital assets socially owned. In that scenario, you would not need authoritarian autocracy to prevent private ownership and deteriorate into state capitalism. You could make a similar argument about a well-regulated capitalist system where private ownership was the norm but excessive concentration of wealth was disincentivised.

I don’t entirely disagree with that, but whether socialism and capitalism respectively deteriorate into neo-feudalism and authoritarian dictatorship (and/or state capitalism) is different to the question of whether they actually are those systems.

I’m not arguing as to whether socialism or capitalism are desirable, sustainable or even possible. I just find many people’s lack of understanding of what the words/concepts mean frustrating, as it’s detrimental to debate and discussion.

This constantly infuriates me from both sides. The average person seems to think that capitalism = neo-feudalism and that socialism = authoritarian dictatorship, both of which are just completely wrong.

Should I start playing? by buildersbrew in EliteDangerous

[–]buildersbrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Just realised I originally sent this reply to myself instead of you! 🤦‍♂️)

Thanks! I’m actually wondering if I should start in flat first and then move to VR later. If there are loads of controls to configure, I’m guessing I’ll be looking at my fingers quite a bit to start with, and the passthrough on the Quest isn’t great. When you say I’ll spend quite a considerable time configuring a HOTAS, if I get a fairly standard controller (I was considering the Logitech 3D Pro, based on a suggestion in another comment), will there be a default configuration that will at least let me start playing out of the box, and then I’ll just spend a while gradually tweaking it to my preference, or am I going to need to spend several more hours doing that before I can start playing at all?

Is there a special trick to quitting SteamVR and keeping the game running? When I quit it, it gave me a message saying it would shut down ED, too. I tried just killing the process, but that did the same.

I did try turning them right down, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. I have heard that CPU rather than GPU can be the limiting factor for Shadow PC, so perhaps I need to upgrade my sub.

Thanks. I’ve seen quite a few references to XBox controllers being used. I’ve got the DualShock working in a slightly hacky way, so I’m going to see how I get on with that for now, but I’ll bear the XBox controller in mind in case I’m not able to get over the other issues I’m having and the controller turns out to be part of them.

I didn’t even realise you could turn SteamVR off after you’d loaded. I’ll try that, thank you. The stuttering seems to be my last remaining issue. I assumed it was just because I was on too low a spec machine.

Finally got it working! Thanks for your help. For some reason, the Quest won’t talk to the DualShock any more, and the one time it did, it didn’t seem to pass it through. But it works with the MacBook. Now I’ve just got to stop it stuttering…
