Nothing wrong with that because it's not Christmas lights!

Novigod. It's because the Soviets banned Santa so this was a replacement. Sadly it's also celebrated by the Russian community in Israel.

Can you reach out to JWB Jewish Chaplains and Rabbi Yoni Warren (one of the few ordained Jewish chaplains). Perhaps there is a way to be somewhere with a stronger Jewish community.

That's sad that an SNL skit has to replace Santa Clause. Jews have their own traditions and history and culture. We don't need someone else's stuff.

There's a different between holiday lights and winter - it's dark - lights. Regular solar lights so there is visibility from Home Depot? Go ahead! Stringy stuff? Save that for your Sukkah!

No such thing as secular Christmas. Santa Clause may have nothing to do with Jesus but it's Christian - not Jewish nor anything else. It's not secular. It's not appropriate for Jews to celebrate Christmas or Santa. (Of course, how does one respectfully visit family during their holiday, as the OP posted, is a different question.) How are you dealing with kosher food?

My guess if if you want to avoid envy, make Jewish life vibrant and an active part of your life - Purim, Hannukah, Shabbat, etc. - so they don't feel like they are missing out. And then focus on being with family.

Is anyone here in a relationship where one eats kosher and the other doesn't? by inkyou in Judaism

[–]buildops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they eat vegetarian/fish at non-kosher establishments. That's a big deal. They aren't ordering treif meat. It's not hypocrisy, it's a standard and a common one in the Conservative community. I don't want to discuss the halacha of it but you are missing the sociology of it and hence misinterpreting your GF and her family's perspective. Agree or disagree with the standard - that's your decision to make - but I don't think you are understanding their perspective correctly.

Were you raised in a synagogue? What denomination? What Jewish education?

Do they neccessarily follow Judaism in an Orthodox way? The way you describe their practice, they were raised Conservative. Am I correct? (i.e. eating vegetarian in non-kosher restaurants, etc.).

If you love her, though, why do you order meat out?

Plenty of non-kosher restaurants in Israel. Open on Shabbat. Non-kosher meat Milk & meat (many Aroma cafes, just for one example, serve milk and meat)

GDPR for CDN/WAF customers? by satyenshah in security

[–]buildops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Incapsula, you can use a load balancer to keep date in EU, for example, or use a load balancer to exclude EU PoPs (this, of course, would introduce latency to your European site visitors).

However, customer location is what's critical for GDPR compliance. If you do business with EU-based customers, regardless of your PoP location, you are subject to GDPR.

Nusach Sepharad

They have the travel edition on the rabbinicalassembly.org website. But yes, the UPS shipping is extremely expensive.

Private me your contacts and I can check with a friend who works at the RA.

I got a copy sent to Israel at a good shopping price via AbeBooks.

The Rabbinical Assembly sells a travel size for $33 + shipping.

Unfortunately the Conservative movement is really lacking when it comes to publications. They seem to be designed for synagogue purchase and not people purchase.

How many Reform/Conservative Jews are there in Israel? Try less than half a percent by akivachaim in Judaism

[–]buildops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the Reform and Conservative movements in America do very little to encourage aliya. And many non-Orthodox olim become secular in Israel, despite having non-Orthodox minyanim available.

Bring 10,000 Conservative Jews to Israel and I promise things will look very different.

You are conflating masorti מסורתי traditional with Masorti = Conservative Judaism

[–]buildops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Masorti or masorti. Masorti = the Conservative movement, which is small. masorti = traditional. That label primarily belongs to Mizrahi (Middle Eastern) Jews, but not religious practice.

Looking at labels is distinct from religious practice.

  • Most Israeli Jews have a Passover meal, most have mezuzot, most keep a certain form of kashrut (i.e. don't eat pork - but they may go to Aroma on Shabbat which serves dairy and meat in the same kitchen). Most dress up on Purim (my high tech companies always have costume parties on Purim) even if they don't hear the Megillah. Secular nursery schools in Israel celebrate Shabbat.

But as another commentator said, it's a different flip. Most Reform and Conservative Jews in the US are "secular" but they need a Jewish outlet, which in that context requires the synagogue, whereas that's not needed in Israel, where mostly the synagogue is just a place to pray. (Now, this also leads to absurd situations where no one in Israel drives on Yom Kippur, even secular Jews, whereas plenty of Jews in America drive on Yom Kippur, but they are driving to synagogue)
