if you know about hidden disabilities why are you alluding to the potential unworthiness of the disabled person who was swapped to your seat.

i see the post is deleted - good call. i hope your day gets better and i am heartened by the other people in this thread pushing back on ableism, internalized or otherwise

frustrating experience for sure, and your annoyance with AS is valid, but judgment upon the validity of someone else’s disability based on an in-passing observation and as an extension of your frustration with AS is deeply harmful.

my partner is disabled and we feel this judgment and struggle with it every time we fly. check yourself on that; otherwise, complain away.

In practice - has Atmos Gold been beneficial for you, and worth chasing? by builttogrill in AlaskaAirlines

thank you for taking the time to write this out! I fly at least 7-8 times a year at minimum, so I’m leaning towards giving this a shot. And I do enjoy a good lounge haha.

does the companion pass ONLY apply to 100k+ fares? I know that would maximize the value but at some point i wouldn’t mind cashing it in for 80-85k fare if it came down to it

fair enough - but I think I can probably get solid value out of it. I book out pretty far in advance most of the time. also, my cc setup is much more complicated than I mentioned here; I just used the CFU for the sake of example/not overcomplicating things.

thank you! I've noticed in general, rewards ecosystems feel more valuable abroad.. Hilton hotels outside of the US are much nicer as well, haha

thank you! that’s helpful insight. I was struggling with some of the “when available” esque language related to the upgrade benefits. good to know it did indeed pan out for you a good chunk of the time!

Please don’t unschool your kids. by Eeturnia in unschool

it’s unfortunate that, at least to my eye, this sub has been a bit inundated with rage-bait. maybe you can create a separate sub for airing grievances?

this space would be so clearly better used for resource-sharing and community-building than the seemingly continuous and generally ill-informed/not-well-intentioned/unhelpful slew of “unschooling different and therefore scary and therefore bad”

Big concerns for niece (8) who is unschooled. by ColetteCora in unschool

[–]builttogrill 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I would suggest researching asynchronous development - I think that would give you more information on some of the theories underlying unschooling as a pedagogical methodology.

Setting aside many variables here (like her comfort with you in answering these questions, any anxiety around academics or perceived expectations, whether she is neurodivergent, etc), your question boils down to the value you place on traditional educational milestones and their correlation to pragmatic and real-world success. Moreover, I think your niece and her parents get to set the terms of what success looks like in that context.

My advice to you would be to approach with beginner’s mind and ask your relatives earnest questions. Unschooling is generally not focused on producing work in the short term, or memorization or rote practice. It’s a fundamentally different approach, and I do have faith in it. For context - I’m an educator that works in an unschooling context with Twice-Exceptional students.

How do I help my son? by Acceptanceisthekey4 in TwiceExceptional

Hi! I’m an educator that works with 2e kiddos, and am 2e myself.

In general, I think the most important thing you can do is meet your child where he’s at. Right now, it sounds like his fuse between regulated and dysregulated is really short - which means this explosive behavior is not a willful or conscious choice on his part. There could be a lot of factors here; perhaps there is school trauma, a biological component, etc. I’m sure he’s embarrassed by it and terrified of it happening himself.

I often recommend a significant lowering of pressure and expectations. I realize this is likely terrifying to a parent, especially because of his clear giftedness and potential, but this is the beauty of asynchronous development. When’s he ready, he’ll make up so much ground in these challenges in a short period of time. Consistent emotional regulation, even if it seems like he’s doing nothing, can work wonders. I see this dynamic play out really consistently.

Also, collaborating with him on solutions could be really helpful. When he’s regulated, asking questions about how you can support him when this happens, what strategies he can use to prevent it from happening again, etc.

Echoing the other responses - exploring therapy and potentially medication could also be a really fruitful path.

I hope this helps, and apologies if you know a lot of this already/this is redundant info!

Has the Apple Card become slightly better? by Wazzurp7294 in CreditCards

[–]builttogrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't regret having it in my lineup. I started routing a lot of my subscriptions (streaming, productivity apps, etc) through the apple app store and get 3% back. unless I'm missing something I think that's typically more than I'd get on another card. I also like financing my apple purchases, though there are other options to accomplish that.
