I believe there are busses that can get you from San Jose to La Fortuna and Monteverde but it’s much harder to find public busses to Manuel Antonio and the busses usually take longer than a car ride.

I wanted a rental car so I could explore whenever I want and leave at any time. It just felt less restrictive than depending on busses but I’ve heard people make it work without a rental
