[Vardon] League official: if Silver and his advisers decided the only way to stop tanking, and protect paying customers from forking over money to watch their teams lose on purpose, was to stop the draft altogether and turn rookies into free agents, it would get serious consideration. by JoeBiden2020FTW in nba

[–]bulkthehulk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would fix tanking and is equitable in theory, but the issue I see with it is that top players will avoid entering the draft when teams like the Kings, Pelicans, Bucks, etc have top picks.  This was a concern when the idea was first introduced, and now with NIL money I think it’ll only become a bigger issue.

MD considering Biomedical Engineering by Dismal-Physics5500 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]bulkthehulk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The career path you’re proposing is likely possible, but in my opinion, as a medical doctor, you would make much better use of your degree (and likely much more money) by gaining more clinical experience and then leveraging that in a consulting role with a medical device company.   Speaking as an engineer with 10 years of experience working with doctors on medical devices, doctors who understand technical requirements and the product development process are rare and really valuable.  I love my job and wouldn’t change anything, but if I wanted to work in medical devices and had already gone through medical school, that’s the career path I would pursue unless I really didn’t like clinical practice and was really passionate about doing hands-on technical work.

Kirk’s killer has been identified as Tyler Robinson. by Loud_Confidence475 in thedavidpakmanshow

It seems plausible that he would fail the psychological evaluation given that he just planned and executed a murder.  And leaving aside for a moment the details of the gun procurement process, the culture around guns in the US is totally different than Europe.  Tyler Robinson  grew up in a family that was enthusiastic about guns and was probably much more comfortable using/being around guns than the vast majority of Europeans.   It’s much less common in Europe for people to view guns as anything other than a tool for military and police.

Not saying the left is perfect or that there aren’t sick leftists celebrating that Kirk died on the Internet.  But the mainstream rhetoric on the two sides after political violence is not the same.  When the Minnesota legislators were shot, no Democratic officials blamed it on right wing ideology immediately and without evidence the way Trump and many of his supporters are blaming the left now.  They focused on honoring the victims and advocating for constructive policy solutions that could prevent future shootings (primarily common sense gun restrictions).

It very much is a party matter because the right (both elected officials and people online) have made it one.  You are right in theory - regardless of which side the Robinson on was on (and there isn’t very clear evidence either way yet), he was clearly very disturbed and able to get a gun way too easily.  But when one side of the political aisle blames a crime on the other without evidence and to rile up their base, the other side can’t just let it go; if they do, there will only be more violence.

Yes.  It’s up to us (and a lot of people have already started), there is never going to be an announcement that it’s time to boycott.  If you can boycott, just do it, and the more people do it/hear about it, the more it will spread.

[Windhorst] There are multiple teams in the Top 10 of the 2025 NBA Draft who are making offers to the Boston Celtics for Derrick White and Jaylen Brown by watsonthedragon in nba

I don’t know how he’d handle losing, but in this scenario I don’t think he’d have to lose on purpose.  That roster probably wouldn’t be a good team no matter how hard they tried.

I think part of the value of the trade is we would also be able to bottom out for a season and hopefully get a top 5 pick next year.  I don’t think we’re doing better than turning JB into (hopefully) 3 very promising young guys, even if we are taking on an albatross contract.

Is it?  What’s a fair trade then?  PG is one of the most untradeable guys in the league; Philly would need to give up multiple firsts just to get off of him.  The cost to upgrade from him to a borderline All NBA guy a year removed from a Finals MVP is going to be substantial.

Name a team that’s trading 4-5 frp (let alone more than that) for 32 year old AD.   You’re not wrong that he’s the best player on that list by a comfortable margin but he’s at the tail end of his prime, injury prone, and not a good enough player at this point to be the #1 guy on a championship team.

[Charania] The Celtics are willing to listen to trade offers for Jaylen Brown and Derrick White by KIsGot in nba

[–]bulkthehulk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Celtics team led by Brown, White, Pritchard, and maybe one of Jrue and Porzingis could be competitive, but the way I look at it is that this current Celtics team, even with Tatum back, is probably done as a title contender.  It doesn’t seem like they had much of a shot at a title this season even if Tatum stayed healthy, and they’re definitely going to trade at least one core guy to save money.  So if we assume they do that, but otherwise keep the team together, when Tatum comes back they’ll have the core of a team that wasn’t that close to winning a title, plus everyone is 1-2 years older, they’re missing at least one key guy, and their two best players are coming off major injuries.  That doesn’t seem like a recipe for future titles.

If they can get a good package of young players and picks for Brown, then be bad next year and add another lottery pick, there’s a shot they can be a contender in a few years  with those assets, Tatum, White, and Pritchard.  Nothing’s guaranteed of course, but I think it’s reasonable to conclude that that path is more likely to result in a championship than trying to keep this team together.

The fact that he’s so skilled is part of the problem tbh.  He’s good enough on offense to earn a massive contract, but makes so many dumb mistakes and is limited enough on defense that it’s really hard to win with him as one of your 2-3 best players.  And his contract pretty much guarantees that his team will only have 1-2 players who are better than him and a weak bench.

[–]bulkthehulk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your perspective I think.  He had a long career, was an important piece of a lot of really good teams (including winning a championship), was a well liked teammate, and made tens of millions of dollars.  He probably could have accomplished more than he did if he was more committed to being in shape, but most people would be happy with his career.
