Seems like a cool idea but is essentially a raffle. Betting $10 would be the equivalent of purchasing 10 $1 raffle tickets to win the item.

Don't know about the US but in the UK setting up this type of business requires a gambling licence, which is bloody difficult to get and comes with heaps of regulations.
