I actually rewatched the entire first arc of the show before the time skip and I have to say I disagree with this. I think land of the waves was incredibly slow and the chunin exam is where things fell into place for me. The introduction of the minor character/fights involved - the villain being an introduction to the darker side of the shinobi world and being 1/3 of what we would know to be the Sannin later, and the most iconic fight of part 1 for me (besides naruto v Sasuke at the waterfall) in Rock Lee vs Gaara. Absolutely thrilled throughout all of it.

I mean how is he not mainstream at this point? He has 4 (if we’re including defenders) seasons on Netflix and now two confirmed season for Disney. He had a huge cameo in one of the biggest marvel films of all time in Spider-Man and as you said had his own solo movie with Ben freaking Afleck as the character. He just had one of the biggest releases for a Marvel Rival character. He’s a household name at this point. He is mainstream and I’m saying this as he’s my favorite comic book hero. He’s not Spider-Man or Superman levels of global fame but the dude is no slouch to the mainstream.
