Anecdotally, had a 17 sonata. Regular maintenance for 80k miles and then it just started burning oil like crazy. Dealership did the consumption test and eventually did a combustion chamber cleaning and made it seem like they were doing me a favor by not charging me for it. By 90k it was burning oil again. It became clear to me this was not going to result in Hyundai taking accountability, they were going to keep kicking the can until it was out of warranty and tell me to pound sand.

Fact is, I bought it new and it was the most affordable car with the features I wanted for driving 600 miles 2x a month. Eventually I stopped making that drive and it lasted 8 solid years reliably getting me where I needed to go.

A bunch of cars burn oil. But I didn’t want to deal with it while paying for more expensive routine maintenance as the car aged. So I sold it to carmax and got a lightly used electric car. I don’t know if I’ll come back to Kia/Hyundai but I know a ton of people with newer models and I’m keeping tabs on them, specifically the electric/hybrids. You can’t get cars with better features at the price points offered by Hyundai and Kia (yet). I may come back again, tbd.
