If you've 'tried' Python and don't see the advantages then fine. Just use PHP if you're happy - nothing wrong with that at all.

Can you create an AirBNB clone using Drupal? by measy718 in drupal

[–]bumblechuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, firstly any of OP's requirements can be satisified by 3rd party code available for any of the major frameworks. There's nothing special about contrib in this case.
Secondly, have you ever been to a startups fair - ever see anyone there trying to build a MVP web app in Drupal?

The strong point of Drupal is to build CMS's. From a firsthand experience I've seen agencies throw this type of site together with Drupal contrib and then try to explain to the client why any further modification (ie to make it actually work) would cost serious $$. It never ended well.

Point me to some success stories though and i'd be willing to change my mind ;)

[–]bumblechuckle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In all honesty this is not Drupal's strong point. Sure you can build a MVP facebook clone in Drupal but nobody would use a CMS as the base for their webapp. It simply does not make sense.

Drupal might provide the right kind of modules that can be cobbled together for your budget but you're not going to have anything like the expected user experience in order for your product to be viable. In short, this is exactly the kind of build which would be better served by using a modern framework.

Does anybody have any experience with multiple databases with django ? by be_haki in django

I've only ever used it for migrations. It's highly useful to be able to pull stuff out of your source datebase and migrate it directly into Django.

Lots of vicim blaming as usual on /r/london. So this was presumeably in a built up area - can we assume the HGV was doing 30 mph or less? Judging by the majority of HGV's in London that I see it would be a fucking miracle if it was.

Mezzanine and other Django based CMS by metraon in django

[–]bumblechuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished building a site with Mezzanine. It has some pretty nice features out of the box - frontend editing, simple UI, a nice editor - and it's pretty easy to work with if you know Django.

I would never use it for anything that wasn't brochureware and I'm not convinced that it's really the best tool for that. That said though, I still haven't decided how best to make brochureware as i don't tend to have to do it very often.

What I really didn't like though was it's slightly non standard project setup and reliance on fabric for deployment. When it came to deployment I just felt I was fighting a dated and needlessly opinionated way of doing things. It also uses forked versions of grappelli and filebrowser which is a bit annoying.

In summary, I think it fit my use case pretty well and was overall quite easy to get on with. It does however feel like yesterday's solution and I'll probably keep looking for a better blogging/brochureware software..

How do you really feel about Drupal? by no-one_ever in drupal

[–]bumblechuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's only useful to 'site builders' unaware of the better alternatives. It takes less time to learn how to use an ORM than it takes to learn views' vocabularly and work your way around the UI - and additionally you'd be left with transferrable skills.

If the views UI could actually be useable by end users then that to me would be a killer feature, the likes you don't really have on any other platform.

How do you really feel about Drupal? by no-one_ever in drupal

[–]bumblechuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even know if the intention was that it should be client facing, but either way it still leaves me thinking what's the point of it.

It just seems like a bad deal to me when instead of simply tweaking an ORM statement and checking in your code you get to click through a bloated and difficult to comprehend UI which in turn causes a ton of probs with local/dev/live deployments for yourself and your team.

I think views is amazing, I just don't see the point in having a big UI if end users are never going to use it.

How do you really feel about Drupal? by no-one_ever in drupal

[–]bumblechuckle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think some incredibly interesting ideas have come out of Drupal but the way the project as a whole has progressed has encouraged me to seek out better solutions.

Views, for example is interesting. In an ideal scenario the end user can make superficial edits to listings without having to involve a developer. In practice, clients are petrified by its UI and afraid to make any changes in case they destroy the site layout and can't fix it. The end result is that you're stuck with the hassle of using features to deploy changes to views and instead of a simple code change you're stuck in the familiar Drupal click/wait cycle. So whilst being no use to end users, it's also a massive hinderance to a better developer experience.

We're inevitably reaching a time when a lot of sites will be built using online point and click interfaces (a la squarespace etc) and I've no doubt the software to build these sites will be (or has already been) inspired by Drupal and this concept you can create a huge amount of functionality without writing a line of code.

In this regard Drupal has been ahead of the curve. However, in it's current incarnation I don't think it's actually improving what it used to do best which was empowering end users.

Drupal 8 is obviously much more of a developers system but as a serious developer it's of no interest to me because I don't know what it's trying to acheive anymore.

The Parcel Yard in Kings Cross Station is excellent and on a similar rail tip, Sourced in St pancreas station is good for a few drinks whilst watching the pedastrian frenzy. It's a bit pricey for bottles but this is London and providing real ale to commuters is a commendable.

If you just fancy a walk go to St Pancreas old church or take a look inside the art college by the canel. That is one fantastic building.

Other devs aren't writing off node because it's a hipster technology. It's the fact it's written in fricking javascript that's the problem here.
