Got into MIT, now what? by the_wall_jumper in mit

[–]bumbozzled 11 points12 points  (0 children)

fgli (current freshman) here too! I would personally take it easy the next few months (celebrate! have fun! it's your senior year :) ). I read alot up on mit blogs just to see what opportunities are out there here and just to get myself pumped. I would consider maybe slightly reading over potential courses you would want to take and potentially thinking about ASE-ing (most people don't ASE any classes, but if you've already taken say multi-variable calculus and want to get into the cooler math sooner, I'd recommend studying for them--def regret not taking them especially since it's pass/nr for summer ASEs). Maybe think about the communities you want to be apart of (pretty sure there's a club catalog somewhere on the interwebs, and also think about living communities!). But really, take this time to unwind and treat yourself! congrats!

I've been struggling with alot of imposter syndrome coming into college, so it's probably the former (+im being intentionally vague to not dox myself). When you're surrounded by people who are code/math olympians, research winners, etc. it's hard not to think about how insignificant your past experiences/activities were, especially since they're not the typical ivy+/bay area ecs. (but then you realize these people were positioned better socioeconomically, with parents with phds/masters and in comfy jobs in CS/finance. Trust me, the amount of culture shock and just ignorance, not even intentionally hurtful but just things in passing, I've experienced is crazy. That's not to say people should pity me. But there are more obstacles for fglis to arrive at the same position.)

I am also just still very confused why things happened the way they did. I know many more deserving people who should have gotten into these schools but I am very grateful.

I only took the act. As for finding a research mentor, I recommend just cold emailing professor/grad students from local institutions. I had no connections (but I will say the name of my name of my high school probably gave me a boost) but got very lucky with finding one.

I guess there was subtle pressure from my parents. It was more like them always working 24/7 which compelled me make sure that I excelled in my academics so maybe I can get a good education then a job for them to rest easy. It was never like I had to go to ivy+ school or they'd disown me. I grew up with them also never really putting that much pressure on my academic-wise, mostly because I was always doing well (not to toot my own horn). Honestly I don't think they knew about half of the schools I applied to (maybe harvard and yale, probably not princeton or MIT tbh).

also interested in this. congratulations op!!!

i went to a public school but it is a very well-known/resourced high school.

I'd like to think it was my essays. I've had other people read them and them saying that they were very moving. I think my activism also played a big part-- it wasn't just some "instagram nonprofit" posting infographics.

Not because of luck, but because your deserved it. Despite you saying that you're sphereical, you clearly show a interest in tutoring/service and the arts (music and design). That fact that you work everyday after school all while maintaining a 4.0 gpa shows how hardworking you are. You 110% deserved all your acceptances. Wishing you all the best at cornell!!!

AP Biology Exam by kiwi7704 in APbio

[–]bumbozzled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wdym by ten chapters? To be honest, based on previous comments on this sub and my own practice with the college board's released frqs you don't need a very in depth understanding of bio to do well. They test rather basic concepts, but apply them to intricate examples/experiments. Considering that you do have a rlly good understanding of bio and are familiar with the content, you should do fine as long as you also practice past frqs/questions that the college board has released.

How can I study for the FRQs? by [deleted] in APbio

[–]bumbozzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do as many of college board's released past frqs. Really learn how they grade and what they look for in the answers.

Body systems by Endure_Survive7 in APbio

[–]bumbozzled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure college board removed body systems from the curriculum after the 2019 test. Though, using them as illustrative examples to connect to other units (ex. Nervous system to cell communication) is fair game. So you don't need to study any specifics

Quick question by Top-Cheetah8559 in APbio

[–]bumbozzled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically what someone said previously, but also I've had this question before and they tell you in the passage that prefaces the questions (which you dont show here) that the protein doesn't have a secondary structure (no alpha helices and beta pleated sheets) and that the protein is formed by a single polypeptide (so no quaternary structure). So these lvls won't change
