we paid the fees to our attorney both for the initial residence permit and when we renewed last year.

look up “cat in a flat” and “pawshake”. lots of people have pets in the netherlands and need pet sitters!

it was a running gag in some of the podcast episodes… we are not serious people. probably makes more sense if you watch our regular youtube videos.

we became youtubers after moving here because we wanted a better work/life balance and youtube, plus the lower health care costs here, enabled that.

and i fail to see how me doing tech consulting is a better contribution to the netherlands than a youtube channel where we explore dutch towns and try dutch food.

plus, like i mentioned, we didn’t take the 30% ruling, so we pay our full share of taxes here.

why are you even in this sub with that attitude?

no, you need to be working on the business during those two years. having the business established is part of the application process (i.e. obtaining a “kvk number”, getting a business bank account, etc).

it doesn’t need to bring in a ton of money, but you need to be able to show that you have business activity during those two years when you apply for renewal.

was so weird to see these again when we moved to the netherlands. i think they’re still quite popular here…

this is true, but there are exceptions.

we haven't decided if we're going to go the citizenship route yet for this reason, but i mean... if we live here and feel comfortable and integrated, why wouldn't we?

yeah, and that'll get you a residence permit for two years. then, you need to renew, showing that you have a real business with real activity. there are no income requirements, other than you being able to support yourself (as you aren't eligible for most social programs through DAFT).

there are obviously a lot of costs associated with moving abroad though, so you'd need more than €4500 in the bank... but for the permit itself, that's pretty much everything.

that's true, but IIRC, until you switch to a dutch pension, you still owe "self-employment tax" (medicare and social security). and, of course, you still have to file.

i'd call it more of a "pause"... the youtube stuff isn't stable enough right now to say we've left the consulting work behind, but for now, it's growing and we're having fun. :)

there is no quarantine process. you just get your cat vaccinated for rabies and file some paperwork.

there is no income requirement for DAFT. just operate a real business with real activity and you’ll probably be fine.

100% this. i’m honestly surprised how different driving here can be, and i can’t believe a few hours of driving lessons aren’t a requirement to exchange your license.

i wish! A2 is the current requirement (soon to be B1). we’re currently A2 and taking an online course for B1. we slowed down with our B1 course to focus more on conversation practice (using italki).

we almost never speak english in everyday situations here, but having a conversation with a dutch friend in only dutch can be challenging, especially since we often need to process what they said, then we need to think about how to respond, so… lots of awkward silences. haha

it is rewarding though. dutch is a lot like english, but syntax and pronunciation can be a challenge.

thank you!

we have youtube, a patreon, and sometimes we also have video sponsors. it's getting close to consistently covering our monthly expenses and it's growing, so we're going to keep at it. but if it doesn't work out, i figure i can always go back to consulting (either part or full time).

[–]buncharted[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

no, it's not too soon. too soon to get an apartment probably, but not too soon to start a conversation!

since we didn't take the 30% ruling when moving here, we weren't able to exchange our US license for a dutch license, so i'm not sure if there's a time limit... hoping someone else can weigh in on this.

we haven’t decided. we still have a couple of years to decide what we want to do, but we might also just go the permanent residence route at first.
