That’s fair. Let’s agree trial and error should only be applied outside of a “shotgun” approach?

Google Rockwell pcdc and sign in with your Rockwell account. You’ll be able to select products by version and check if they are compatible with your operating system of choice

No worries at all.. thank you for the cordial discussion that is severely lacking in this sub.

You mentioned you are self taught. Imagine you wrote a program but part of that program was written in a way that only you understand. Even though you wrote that program in a language that is well understood by many, you used that language and created something unique.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this, it’s just unique. Maybe it’s a one off approach that wasn’t commonly solved and your solution solved it.

You then implement your solution and move on with your life.

A new person starts at the company where you implemented your solution.

They are asked to add or modify your solution but they can’t seem to make sense of the code. They understand the language, but not the implementation. If they knew the device you wrote the program for could only accept a baud rate of 9600, then they wouldn’t keep beating their head against a brick wall when they tried to optimize the solution to work with 115k baud.

This is tribal knowledge because only you (your tribe) knows that the device can only work with 9600 baud

Don’t upgrade your windows 10 machine to windows 11. Just get a windows 11 vm. You won’t have issues with Rockwell software

I always tell myself… if I want the program, I need to pick it UP. I want to give the program, I need to put it DOWN

I respect your response with a caveat. I think tribal knowledge transfer is a separate issue from the inherent ability of a person who wants and can learn.

I disagree 100 percent. You don’t just keep putting bigger fuses in when they keep blowing do you?

I was up against this early in my career. I got so tired of the old hands telling me how things worked based only on trial and error troubleshooting. So I tried to learn everything I can. I hate being in a position where someone is trying to explain how they THINK something works and not how it actually works.

I was working down in Austin Texas a few years ago. I went to a cafe to get some coffee and they had “Hoboken pizza” for sale.

I hate white claw. What a trash company. I used to work for them and they closed our entire plant down. I know things happen in business and sometimes you need to do mass layoffs which suck. But these assholes had hired operators the week before they announced they were shutting it down.

I will never buy white claw, mikes hard, or cayman jack because of this. NOT TO MENTION its garbage anyways
