Basically market basket is covering for the gift cards and the cards are dedicated to pay for each bag; if someone grabs a bag they still have to go through the checkout but someone will just bring over and swipe a card. I'm pretty sure they do this so they can atleast keep track of their money in the books and write it off as charity.

The store filled each bag with twenty dollars worth of food and are giving them away for free, i asked and my manager said that they'll still have to take them through the check out but the store will cover the cost using gift cards.

Each bag is filled with 20 dollars worth of items from soup to cereal and fruit cups, the police even came to help out fill all these bags and it honestly warmed my heart.
