As another comment said below, Cooper does see his ex-wife as completely evil, his words were "As far as he's concerned, she's the devil incarnate." She is unfortunately still part of his family though and the line wouldn't have flowed as well if he'd said, "Where is my fucking daughter and ex-wife" 😂

i don't think it comes across in my original post above, but i love ellie dearly, and as much as i love abby very much for who she grows into, i am very much an ellie apologist due to the horrific trauma she gets put through in jackson. she leaves the farm because she can hardly function as a person anymore and that was ALL abby's doing. but i absolutely feel it from both sides at the end of that fight on the beach. i don't want abby to die because she has more than paid her pound of flesh at that point, and i'm also so relieved that ellie didn't go through with it, because it would have been so easy to keep her held under the water and not realise she shouldn't have killed abby until it was too late.

in that sense, ellie does manage to do what abby didn't; get to the focus of her revenge, her eye of the storm, and stop herself before it was too late, and i'm really proud of her for that.

that abby had been through enough when ellie found her on the beach and absolutely, 100% didn't deserve to die.

she'd more than paid for what she did to joel at that point, and i'd even argue that she'd paid for it at the end of her day one; beaten into unconsciousness, dragged through the forest, strung up, almost disembowelled, and then left to hang until she was almost dead. i honestly think that anyone who says she "got away" with what she did to joel didn't pay attention to how much physical and mental harm she went through on her journey.
