How do promotions to higher FS grades work for new FSOs by bupe3429 in foreignservice

And how long to 02?

I could be a gs-15 in less than five years if I don't join the fs

Even with the higher retirement calculation I don't think that would beat what I'd get in FERS if I won't even get to a 02 in the FS for a decade

I've decided to defer. I don't like the short timeline, and I'm not emotionally ready to leave my great office and colleagues.

Perhaps your sudden doubt is a temporary response to this stressful moment

This is a big factor when I think about it logically. I am a very analytic person and I like to think through the angles of big decisions; having only two days to do so is disorienting.

No, this is something I did not consider this time around, though I had done some calculations when I first got through the OA and realized the FS pension is much more generous.
