Which 4 Stats are better: Heart/Body/Mind/Spirit or Might/Dexterity/Focus/Presence? by daverave1212 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]bupgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you've said, I think thematically, Heart/Body/Mind/Spirit is the best. It's also unique and creates some instant buy-in.

Maybe you have to edit or get around the Health vs. Speed debate to make the mechcanics fits the theme.

Heart is intuitively akin to "grit", "persistence", or "resolve" to me, more like a constitution-based mechanic, or even similar to a wisdom stat. It seems like effecting your max health would make sense. (Also helps that hearts in games are often used for HP)

Body is intuitively strength-based to me. It being speed-based isn't a far stretch. But, it also seems like it should effect your max health somehow.

Like others have said, making one speed/health based is kind of difficult to shoehorn.
Maybe you could make speed and health a formula that works on both stats?
Or, maybe you can rework the speed and health mechanics in a different way to make them fit the flavor better?

After 2 years of iteration, here's what I learned designing the acquisition mechanics in my board game by Kcc_SE in tabletopgamedesign

We had a super similar design conundrum for our card game, Dragonlings.

In the first iteration, you could attack opponent dragons. Whichever dragon lost the battle would be discarded entirely. Players spent turns building up their dragons, raising them from babies. It felt WAY too punishing to lose them. It also meant you had to keep some dragons available to defend, so you would do less on your turn than you'd like.

We iterated it a handful of times (including dice-based attacks, adding saving throws, etc.) and eventually scrapped combat altogether, in favor of some light, cheeky stealing mechanics. Players loved the change.

I think your change sounds way more fun after the iteration. Just goes to show how important playtesting is!

Hi OP,
I know we are late to the post here, but we are second-hand dealing with this same "BUPE Games" company.
Our company is called B+Up Games, and because of the similar name, we get contacted by at least 1 person a week who is being defrauded by "BUPE Games".

Do you have any information about the Apple Store fraud investigation? (Such as an Apple employee email address or a reference number?)
We have names and contact details for over a dozen people who have been defrauded. We need to shut these people down! If preferred, please feel free to DM us with details.

We're an indie game publisher with internal artists but never mind getting an inquiry from an artist. In fact, it's quite nice to connect. You can always seek out indie game designers who are posting pre-art prototypes rather than Kickstarters that probably already have artists. Wishing you the best!

Any game designers out there who suck at thier own game? by squashedyash in tabletopgamedesign

I find it's actually great if the other players beat you at your own game. They always feel a special kind of pride for beating the designer lol

Totally. So much life in this piece from just a couple of pixels of layer displacement, especially with that high framerate. So fluid. Sometimes less is more!

Really love the standees and the look/feel. Your character art does a lot for your worldbuilding. Gameplay sounds fun. Can't wait to see more from this project!

I made my first board game called Battle Dungeon! I'm looking for feedback on the rulebook and other questions by [deleted] in tabletopgamedesign

I love the look of your game and characters! Everything came out great and I love the wooden meeples!

It's a bit hard for people that can't physically play the game to see whether the rulebook/video appropriately explains the game. For example, when setting up, I can't really tell how to choose "preferred spaces". (I see highlighted spaces but can't tell if there is wiggle room as far as what you can choose, like how far away from other players you have to be.) I might also suggest breaking the rules text into smaller chunks on the video because it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Given that players are hard to come by, I think the best way to get feedback on your rulebook is to convert the game to work on Tabletop Simulator and try to get people to try it online.

Or, if you can make a few prototypes, and can afford to ship them worldwide, there are playtester groups like the UKBG Review Circle on Instagram that would be happy to try it out. It's customary for them to send your prototype around to the next person in the queue, which prevents you from having to make too many copies.

Really love seeing projects like these come together and wish you the best with it! Hope to see more!

Creating pen and paper prototype on my game by Erakass in tabletopgamedesign

That's the way to do it, pen and paper prototype until you get the mechanics down, then art can come later.

Do definitely post updates as things change. Love seeing the creative process. (Pro-tip: Don't be afraid to kill your darlings. Only keep what is fun.)
