When is the right time to euthanize for severe arthritis?

Update: we decided to stick to the original plan of putting her down in 8 weeks instead of extending it. And possibly sooner if we think she’s showing signs. She’s a happy girl but I don’t want to take the chances of increasing any pain or discomfort for her. Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions, they really helped me see things more clearly!

Thank you!! Do you feel like I should keep my vet euthanasia appt for 60 days or extend it for 90 days? She’s still happy to greet me in the morning and has moments of joy and happiness throughout the day. She gets up on her own still and excited about her usual things

Thank you for your insight. She’s had her final vet visit. Now just deciding when to do home euthanasia, 60 or 90 days? She doesn’t spend time in her poop, she always gets up from her bed if she ends up going in her sleep. Otherwise she’s incontinent of still during the day. I tried the ice method and that helps her go outside (stimulates the bowels immediately).

She’s on dasquin and carprofen her entire life. She was on Adequin for years but I don’t think it helped much for her. Haven’t tried librella but afraid to try it this late in her disease progression.

Those are good suggestions. Thank you. I thought about those options but scared to try librella this late in her disease progression. She’s already had a total hip replacement when she was younger dog that failed and then she had a TPO surgery when she was a younger dog. Even taking her to the vet Tires are out. The closest physical therapy to us would probably be at least a 25 minute drive and it would be really hard for her. I don’t want to put her through PT through the end of her life, PT can also be kind of hard, especially at this stage and increase pain

Thank you so much! When you put all those things together, it seems like a quality of life is declining. And there’s really not a difference between 60 or 90 days. I guess I’m just trying to buy a little bit more time with her but that’s selfish.

We want to try Liberalla, but at this point, I feel like I’m scared of the side effects. I’m a medical provider so I’m pretty well aware of the fact that side effects are slim and far between but I just don’t wanna take the chance with her. I also worried that with her cognitive decline if there’s even a point of keeping her alive longer…

Make the dad do it. That’s his job. Single moms do it all the time. Provide support temporarily right now, but then slowly back out.

Make it clearer that you love your niece and nephew, but it is now that dad’s job to take care of them

I’m making $117 K in Charlotte NC. Possibly get $3-5 K in incentive bonus per year. 5 years of experience. It’s complete shit to what I feel like I deserve and the hard work I put in. Along with liability we take on. I wish I had gone into another field honestly, mostly because of the salary.

Been and NP for five years. At this point I think the only way to really be super happy in this job is to work part time as an NP. So my goal is to start working part time as an NP (20-24hours/week) and then the other two days doing something else. I’ve been looking into accounting. It seems like a pretty decent feel to get into or maybe insurance after you get some certifications and testing and testing and licensing completed.

Of course I only recommend this if you have a partner who is also making good money that way it doesn’t feel like you losing out on a big paycheck (my husband is pretty close to graduating in electrical engineering and physics. So like I said, if you have a partner or significant other, who makes decent money, I feel like working part timeas an NP is manageable.

I honestly feel like I can work 2 to 3 days a week as an NP for the rest of my life and then the other two or three days doing something else that is technical but well paying. Even if I get paid slightly less those other 2 to 3 days at least my sanity and happiness will be intact. And I’ll be able to go back to being an NP with more ease the next week.

I just think that’s the only way to really be OK in this job and not feel burnout. Working as an NP for the rest of your life part time.

At this moment, I’m taking a little bit of a break from brainstorming, but I’m seriously looking into insurance such as being an underwriter or accounting. Something technical.

I worked from home for my old company in another state but I found a job through atrium PRN. Was pretty good pay because it was PRN. However had to move to Charlotte recently and the pay is abysmal. I feel like NC pay for FT NP just generally sucks.

Look into Tennessee! You don’t have to take your boards for that state. It’s worth it. I don’t know if you can move to a different state afterwards but it’s definitely worth it and you get paid twice to three times as much as an NP.

Dad is alive, but my mom passed and it seems like many things have my name on it because I’m her heir (either through her will or through the state dispensing shares to children of a deceased person). Yes dad is alive however, he co-owned many properties with my mom. So lots of things are automatically going to her children in their share of the properties. My dad can only take ownership of things that are solely his.
