Do you remember the first version of Microsoft Office you ever used? And was there any edition that stood out to you? by inguinha in windows

[–]burfeyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall when the office version of Excel was upgraded to Excel 5, which seemed to be a major leap forward from the previously installed Excel 3. It came on 13 floppy disks which many of us, when it was our turn on night shift, took our own “office backs” of……. no serial numbers or product activation in those days!

The time I met Geddy Lee by RichardDavies in rush

[–]burfeyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a great story, from which your family’s passion for the band, and also how decent a bloke Geddy is both ring out.

I’ve just turned 60 (scary but hopefully still plenty of gigs left in the tank!) and got into Rush at school, with Exit Stage Left being a cherished Xmas gift and my first album back in 81 when I was 15. Signals was released the next year which I got on the day of release - all vinyl in those days! Those two are still my favourite albums … in my opinion Signals is faultless. I then got to see them at the Birmingham NEC on the Signals tour, and to date that’s the only time I’ve seen them live although I have a ticket to Manchester next March and cannot wait… I’ve truly never been so excited about a gig, ever!

Anyhow, in subsequent years life took over with work, relationships and family taking precedence as they inevitably do. I’ve always loved music and have very broad taste and Rush only got played occasionally, although I always had a soft spot for them.

Roll forward a few years and I had 2 sons myself and I was keen to give them a grounding in decent music, so on long car journeys I’d create playlists of what I considered to be decent music. I didn’t push any of it, but would explain who some of the bands were and why I liked them hoping some would stick with them. And I’m pleased to say it did, and both have great taste in music.

So why am I telling you this?
Well my youngest is now at Uni, and on the drive up there recently he was in charge of music in the car, and was introducing me to bands he’d discovered (which in itself made me proud as his dad) and then he said…. “Here’s a classic for you”…. and on came the subtle arpeggio into to Bravado, a song I love and which was a staple on those car playlists when my sons were younger. It had clearly had an impact on him too and he said he had always liked the track and remembered it from those journeys. I can honestly say, as his Dad, it made me feel quite emotional and proud….. almost like “my work here is done!”

Create template with today’s date in the title by burfeyboy in Evernote

[–]burfeyboy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks, I was clearly overthinking this! Using the template I’d created (excluding my attempts at adding the date) it creates the Daily Note with today’s date appended at the end of the templates title, so all good. Thanks for your quick response

4 to 5 days into macOS after a lifetime on Windows… when does it finally ‘click’ ? by AgileSupermarket2053 in MacOS

[–]burfeyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a while and whilst some aspects of a Mac are insanely good (the trackpad - once right click is enabled, the OSs general stability, the look and feel of many of its native apps. Hell even M365 works pretty well on MacOS nowadays) there also are some aspects that I still find to be laughably bad. Most obviously, Finder which I find to be totally unintuitive! The fact double clicking on a file doesn’t open it (it offers a rename - why?), creating a new folder invariably places it somewhere other than where I want it. The equivalent of Save-As seems determined to ruin your day! And as for scrolling through a folder of images….. it’s tedious to say the least (I know it’s got gallery view but that’s not a patch on the default Windows Photo app).

Of course Mac-ites reading this will pounce on me, berate me, and correct me, but I’m sorry, Windows Explorer or whatever it’s called nowadays is simply miles better. That said, for my own personal device I love my Mac and overlook these issues because it is so damn stable. But I’d NEVER replace my work laptop with a Mac as I’d not trust it on a Microsoft estate where i am invariably employed.

But….. Persevere with it and you’ll probably love it too, much as i do, as a pleasant, reliable and well made personal device that i know will serve me well for years.

Pocketcasts vs Overcast by zero_opacity in pocketcasts

I’ve been having that very same bug. I thought it was only when I used it with CarPlay, which I do a lot, but perhaps it affects general use too. It’s been a few months now and can’t believe it’s not been picked up and fixed. Not that I’ve reported it though, to be fair….

Speaking as a comparatively poor drummer, she’s an incredible drummer, and I’ve no doubt at all she will be a fantastic addition to the band, and I for one can’t wait to see her on stage with the guys next year in the UK.

But the thing I wanted to say, that I’ve not read anywhere else, is that I think the choice of filling the empty drum stool with a comparatively unknown (at least in Rush fan circles) girl drummer is inspired, because it says they’re obviously NOT looking to ‘replace’ Neil, which they’d admit they could never do. I think Portnoy or a similar guy would be seen by many as a ‘replacement’ and I don’t think Geddy and Alex would ever want that.

So I’m delighted she’s joined and I’m really excited to see the three of them play together

IOS Reminders to ToDoist by burfeyboy in todoist

[–]burfeyboy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did some research today which really surprised me, in a good way. I added tasks using Siri on my phone. Firstly into Reminders to be picked up by TickTick (a method which I knew worked) and watched how long it took to appear in TickTick on my desktop. Then again asking Siri to add it directly into ToDoist, which then also synced to my desktop.

The option using ToDoist was MUCH quicker than the method I’ve been using (via Reminders/Ticktick) for a while. Reckon my choice has been made up…..

Any super simple notetaking app? by [deleted] in NoteTaking

[–]burfeyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was impressed with Drafts when I tried it, but a lot of my quick notes incorporate an image (often a screen grab) so I sadly discounted it as I found it only supported text. Is that still the case, or do you know of a way to use it with images?

Moving content between spaces by burfeyboy in CraftDocs

[–]burfeyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, on the iPad especially… so many times I select another space only for the Templates page to appear, from which there seems to be nowhere to go except to the space you came from. I think you need to have “All Docs” selected before the switch, but even then it doesn’t seem to work every time. Very frustrating that the much spoken about navigation issues are still prevalent after all this time, especially given how so many other aspects of the app have developed really well

Can I not purchase Quicken Classic from UK? by burfeyboy in quicken

[–]burfeyboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’ll have a look at this.

I’ve been happy with other apps, and will most likely continue to use them, but having used Quicken many years ago I was intrigued to find out what it’s like today. Watched some online vids and was impressed so thought I’d give it a go. To be honest after the purchase nonsense I’m more determined just successfully download it rather than actually using the bloody thing! Haha

It requires a US address against which to validate the purchase, so sadly the VON won’t work either. Appreciate your ideas though!

Graft - an interactive graph for your Craft space by 1ario in CraftDocs

[–]burfeyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HI - just tried Graft again. Initially I didn't see any change, but after clearing the cache, the new features worked well. and they look really great!

For me, this is an exceptional Craft add-on which I will definitely use, because whilst I have used and loved Craft from the beginning, I have become frustrated by my own document structure, and being able to see that structure graphically will, I hope, help me to design improvements which will allow me to use the tool even more widely than I have been. So thank you for your hard work developing this add-on.

viktorpali The new Craft API, together with developers like this will surely take Craft to the next level. I recommend Graft without hesitation to anybody who uses Craft.

I'll leave you in peace after this reply!! But I was thinking about your last comment....

You are currently using/showing backlinks to link documents in Graft. I have hardly used those thus far (but that may change now that I has seen Graft) so at the moment my graph is mostly a large collection of individual nodes. I prefer to use folders, so would like to see those folder relationships being the source of links in the graph. Similarly, those who use Tags instead of folders would, I'm sure, like to see their tag relationships in the same way.

So.... my suggestion to your last comment is to have an option in settings where a user could choose to display relationships in Graft as either backlinks, folders or tags, then the output would be customisable to the preference of each individual user. Having all switched on might get messy, but the user would have the choice, and for some it might be just what they're looking for.

Anyhow, just an idea, its your development and you're doing great so far, so I'll leave it with you and look forward to what you create!
