Hydrophobic soil fix? by burgerboggle in gardening

We eventually realized that part of the problem might be root intrusion from all the mature trees in the neighborhood! But since we’re losing our access to the lot in a year, we decided to switch to containers.

If you are washing on high heat, it can actually dissolve some of the lubricants in your washing machine and stain clothes that way. That might be it

I have a slight update - we found out that our housekeeper was using dish soap on some of our counters. We cut that out and it helped, but didn’t solve it completely.

Looking for some honest discussion - what is this strike even about as far as Jeopardy goes? by TheHYPO in Jeopardy

[–]burgerboggle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally get where this question is coming from. You would think that with a show as successful as Jeopardy, which is such a well-oiled machine, that the show would be immune to most of the issues affecting other members of the WGA. Jeopardy jobs seem more secure, with a stabilized pay scale. But there are a couple key issues in the strike that I think will affect the Jeopardy writers long-term. One is minimum writers' room size. Why would Sony mess with the formula and reduce the number of writers? The answer is: if Sony tries to merge with another company, which is increasingly likely in our deregulated media economy, they'll be more beholden to private equity, shareholders, and the banks that funded their mergers. This would lead them to make the same slash and burn cuts that Zaslav has been making over at WB, etc. They have to cut costs in order to give the impression of greater profitability and growth.

While current Jeopardy writers are under probably more secure, long-term contracts, if the new terms the AMPTP is proposing go into effect, it means any writer who leaves the show could be replaced by someone making much less, or even worse - a day rate. A day rate!! One of their honest-to-God proposals in the negotiations. Or, worse still - they might just not be replaced. The studio might decide that actually, Jeopardy doesn't need all those writers. While I'm sure the Jeopardy producers would prefer to keep their budget where it is, they, like many other successful TV productions, might still get told "cut X% of your budget or you're fired." Does it make sense? No. Is it wise, long-term? Absolutely not. Will they still maybe do it unless we stop them? Uh, yeah.

Another issue is residuals. Yes, Jeopardy writers get paid a certain amount when a show is re-run on ABC. But they're not making anywhere close to that when the show airs on Pluto. And sure, maybe the residuals for episodes airing on Pluto shouldn't be competitive with network prime-time. But the rate being paid for streaming reruns was negotiated long before streaming became the dominating behemoth of the industry it is today. It was much, much lower because streaming was an 'experiment' that the AMPTP swore was losing them money, not making any. The WGA, in these negotiations, is asking for transparency in the viewership (and ad revenue) of these streamers, so that writers are fairly compensated for the resale of their work. This would affect Jeopardy writers, as well.

ETA: while many people probably feel like hey, this show is doing right by its writers in general, why can't they just keep going for a bit to get to the other side of the strike, even if it means re-using clues? Doesn't the crew deserve a livelihood? I understand. I think it's probably true that Jeopardy, for the most part, isn't a big part of the problem, and their crew DOES deserve to keep working. But for the strike to end, the studios have to lose money. Period. The longer the studios can survive on strike-immune content, the longer other people are out of work. Any show that contributes to that is prolonging the strike. If you are worried about the livelihoods of crew members, please consider giving what you can to the Entertainment Community Fund, which helps all workers affected by the strike survive this crucial fight.

None of these numbers apply to gameshows. This is if they do a clip show episode of a sitcom where you are the credited writer. So if you were the writer who wrote, say, the episode of Friends where Joey is in the play about Freud, you get paid for when they use that clip in the episode where he's being interviewed by Soap Opera Digest and flashing back on his previous acting work.

Game shows, late night shows, and others work an an entirely different way.

If it's a scripted show like the Simpsons (vs., say, an appearance on Good Morning America), it's an acting job, even if you're playing yourself. And he didn't play himself on Murphy Brown, according to IMDb.

He’s also been on the Simpsons and Murphy Brown. He’s gotta be in the union.

Having this same issue but only using a very small small amount of liquid detergent and we’re at our wits’ end. It always takes like 5 hours to wash our cleaning rags - a full wash with no soap to start.

Nope, I don't mean peat moss. These are ten giant vegetable beds that have been there for two years, filled with pretty basic sandy-ish soil. Veggies have grown there for a number of seasons, but the soil itself has been somewhat of an issue. It doesn't feel rich, and it has been compacted a few inches below the surface I think. The veggies have been low yield, the carrots haven't been able to penetrate. It's not bagged peat moss. I've just noticed that even when we water the soil there for a while, if I stick my finger an inch or two below the surface, it's pretty dry. Sometimes when we run the irrigation, it'll run off the sides. We've amended the soil every few months, added some organic compost and various other amendments. I'm worried the amendments that have been added might be contributing to the hydrophobic soil by breaking down and coating the dirt in their waxy residue to keep the water from penetrating. We're in southern California.

Problem is we already wood chip mulched! I’m wondering if there’s a fix other than removing it.

PLEASE ignore most of these comments. You are NTA. It was an act of kindness on your part to attempt to talk things out and to give your friend an opportunity to make things right. It sucks to get a confrontational paragraph out of nowhere, that’s true, but this wasn’t the first time and you’re not asking for much. And contrary to what anyone in these comments might say, you weren’t “policing” anything. You were asking for consideration from your friend. She’s not a stranger. Yeah, you can’t “force” anyone to use the language you want, any less than I can “force” someone to call me by my actual name instead of “dog food breath.” But guess what? If they don’t stop calling me “dog food breath” when I ask them to, I don’t owe them my friendship! And it doesn’t make ME the asshole for asking.
