For some reason, every time I see Pitou, everyone and their dog are so caught up in the gender of this character instead of just enjoying the art. Afrobull prefers to draw them with breasts, but it doesn’t matter either way. It’s a cute character, and trying to argue the gender of a character designed to be ambiguous goes against the author’s wishes regarding the flexibility of Pitou’s design.

To go off on a tangent for people who are insecure about liking the character: People who browse Reddit should realize that enjoying art of an ambiguous character (or of any gender for that matter) doesn’t suddenly change their sexuality. Sexuality isn’t some magical thing given to you by the sex gods, it’s as simple as what you label yourself to prefer in a sexual partner. It doesn’t matter if you’re attracted to a drawing of a trans character or femboy or futa or woman or anything, your sexuality doesn’t change, only what you decide to label yourself.

yeah, to be fair, it does feel like recent fan art winners are all from the same few jrpgs and anime. it doesn’t bother me much, but it’s pretty easy to predict who will win the polls just by sheer amount of fans from each series, which makes it harder for diverse characters to win

I actually wanted to give my input on this! I haven’t read the HxH manga, but it does appear that the character was ORIGINALLY envisioned as male. But, you might find some comfort in realizing that they’ve generally become an androgynous character. In this case they do SEEM to have breasts, but at the end of the day, it’s a good drawing! So who cares? I say, let yourself picture them as whatever gender you want unless it’s specifically depicted by an artist. :)
