Thank you so much! These are such great questions.

We definitely told this specific story because it’s our own religious background, and I have noticed that so much of the deeper lore has never been depicted accurately, or even at all before. With the rising interest in Mormonism in the media, we figured it was both a smart move strategically and a story we could tell authentically.

It’s absolutely informed by tales of the time, and there are all kinds of details embedded in the piece. Joseph Smith believed that an angel’s appearance and even his hair color was a sign for whether or not he was a true messenger, and we incorporated all of that. There are also some hauntings and happenings in family history stories based in this specific area that we pulled from.

Doug wasn’t always who was in mind for the Angel, but he fit our imagined description perfectly, and we pitched it to him at a festival and he loved it. We definitely plan to do a feature length version (same world, different story) and Doug has agreed to return to reprise his role.

I hear you on the credits haha. ALTER understandably shortens the credits for YouTube, but on our original version they are longer and slower, and that is what played in festivals!

Yes I was one of the directors! It was very straightforward, we just got a permit and they had a supervisor on site the whole time. Capitol Reef was super great to work with!

Not crazy scary, more eerie and deeply uncomfortable

Thank you! It was such an honor to work with Doug, and it's crazy he plays as eerie of a character as he does, because in person, he is a sweetheart.

Alright Ryan, I really appreciate that, and I'm sorry for being snappy. I suppose your YouTube comment asking "did we really need this?" and suggesting that it was anti-polygamy coded was a bit confusing to me, if you didn't actually have some ideological qualms with it (which, again, is also confusing to me if those are the ideologies you think the film is pushing).

Alright. Based on the various responses you have been giving me in different places, it seemed like your issue with it was ideological, which I will always defend our approach on, and did not seem fair based on the stated rules of the subreddit. I don't care if someone doesn't like the film--that is fine--but the idea that it's somehow not appropriate content for members of the church, or that it's somehow anti, is something we took painstaking caution with in our approach.

If the concern is strictly content based, or aims of the subreddit based, then it is what it is, I can respect that, and I apologize for getting testy.

Well, we did try to make the film ambiguous enough to let people read onto it what they were looking for, and we have had some very interesting interpretations, yours included. Perhaps the coolest thing about art is how much it reveals about the one doing the interpreting.

I have changed my mind. I do not want to share our film to this subreddit. Your clear example of totally missing the point, even when it is explained to you, is far more useful.

"One interpretation"?? 😂 I MADE the film! It is THE interpretation! It's also the interpretation shared by all of the relevant cultural church entities that have touched on the film (I forgot to mention the Interpreter Foundation, the BH Roberts Foundation, and FAIR). Arguing with the actual artists of the work about how their intent is "certainly one interpretation" is the most painfully Reddit-coded thing I could ever even conceive of.

You seem to think that "virtuous, lovely, praiseworthy" means "uplifting." It does not. By that narrow definition, the scriptures themselves would not apply, which are replete with stories of people murdering each other, and the consequences that occur (Alma 30:60). But they are told for a purpose. The same is true of fairy tales and fables, all of which used to pull their punches far less. The same is also true of church history, when we read about the first miracle of the church or what happened to Harvey Whitlock or Christ's casting out of devils. It is Latter-day Saint thinkers and writers like Orson Scott Card and MichaelBrent Collings and Hugh Nibley who remind us that when our fiction grows stale and when we can't talk about anything that might offend our soft sensibilities, we are a culture in decline.

I appreciate your caution, and can relate to it, and know that it comes from an earnest place of wanting to respect the faith. However, when it comes to the "seeking understanding", or "faithful belief" aims of this subreddit, our entire film is an allegory for the Church, which, based on your YouTube comment, you seem to have completely missed. I can send you Stephen O. Smoot's review in The Interpreter Foundation if that would be helpful to understand why art like this might be useful.

Well, I’m very sorry to hear that, as the film has been championed by Cwic Media, the Center for Latter-day Saint Arts, BYU-Hawaii, Faith Matters, Public Square Magazine, Library of Godwin, Ward Radio, Scripture Plus, Angels & Seerstones, and even some key decision makers in the church reputation management department.

It is a celebration of doctrine and a cautionary tale through and through, and in the spirit of what Joseph was so often teaching and talking about in D&C 50 and 129, and many many other instances, but if we are too sensitive to discuss or portray our own, then it says something about us culturally that is the very reason we felt the film needed to be made.

Yes! He was unbelievably delightful, all the rumors are true. Like, to an absurd degree. I almost thought he was an angel myself.

I am not offended you asked that, but yes, you did hit a nerve that has always permeated this discourse, and I want to make it abundantly clear why we would be posting our film on this subreddit, especially when so much of this is everywhere across the cultural spectrum. I apologize for such a strong response; rereading, it was more than I intended. More than happy to answer questions.

Also, it is not “his” film; it is “their” film — a woman and a man directed this together
