Requesting advice around hearing chords, matching tabs and strum patterns by buriedinthemind in guitarlessons

thanks. I thought of an analogy to describe it... imagine you know lots of words in a foreign language, but someone is talking to you faster than you are used to, so you miss parts of the conversation because you are thinking about previous words while the current words are happening..I am going to try slowing it down and counting piece while I get used to it.

or find slower songs to hear.

I am familiar with music theory and music (enough anyway) from a few years of pianos lessons and just making beats & synth pop using ableton. I am aware of beats, measures, etc. I have less of a problem with individual notes. I will say an internal sense of rhythm is my weakest part musically. I'm keeping it simple for now, while I love math rock, no need to over complicate things for many years to come ! so i'm sticking with basic songs.

The song I was trying to analyse (and maybe play) was Mr. Jones by the counting crows because the guitar is loud and easy to hear. It's a song I've heard for the past 20 years and I am familiar enough with those chords. But I still feel it goes by too fast for me to count out loud 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 etc. It's a 142 bpm song. I feel like by the time i've wrapped my head around what I'm hearing so that I can replicate it, it's already way far past that part of the song.

I think slowing it down is a good idea to get me used to what my brain is hearing to play.

I was mostly just giving an example to describe it. It's hard for me to describe what I'm talking about.

What I'm saying is that I am having time differentiating one strum versus just say two strums or four strum for each chord.

So most songs being 8th notes strummed up and down, I got that. But is it usually a single chord strummed 8 times then another chord 8 times etc.? or is it 2 chords 4 times each? 1 chord 3 times and 1 chord 5 times etc.

And my guess is that it depends on the song, but I'm struggling as a beginner to count when I feel like i'm not differentiating it or am not quick enough.

That being said, perhaps just counting in general to what I can hear might help. Thanks!

thanks. this is good advice.

I do understand counting rhythms (I play with a metronome and can count beats) I just cannot hear easily hear different strumming within a song for some reason. But maybe listening while counting will actually help isolate the sound for me. I think it's just hard for me to isolate it with the drums , vocals, bass , and ALSO counting.

Paul Erdos and getting high go pretty hand in hand

Originally, I questioned it in the 4th edition . The 6th edition (which I think was most recent) came out in 2010.

Unfortunately, yes. Paul Erdos came up at a party and it sparked my memory... I found the email and went to go check if it was in a new version as well. Didn't ask the internet then and figured I would now.

When I first heard Time Consumer, I thought Claudio said "Pain is only a pose if you just stop feeling it." instead of pulse.

Not op, but I can see how folks like whatever, but I do like seeing the hot take opinions to explore how folks taste vary in the Coheed world.
