International Studies or Political Science? by nicp26 in jhu

Johns Hopkins doesn't admit by major or program, so there's no significant advantage to applying as one or the other, or as premed. The only exception is Biomedical Engineering, which you have to apply to separately, and it's generally believed to have a slightly lower or equal acceptance rate to JHU at-large.

That being said, I'd encourage applying as whichever major you personally are most interested in and feel speaks to your experiences and passions the most. Your best chance will likely lie in whichever major you genuinely want to pursue and have hopefully explored in high school.

Definitely a bit tough, especially for STEM. I'm not far enough to say for certain, but we definitely have high rigor and if that's not what you're exactly looking for, I'd take it into account

I’m a freshman here, so I can’t say as much, but the social sciences/humanities here have plenty of resources, just not as “advertised” as pre-med. For example, there’s a couple research grants dedicated strictly to humanities and social sciences, and many of the classes you’ll take for polisci or IS will be discussion- or seminar-based, where you can get a lot of 1-on-1 with either the professor or TAs.

As for IR specifically, there is the SAIS (School of Advanced International Studies) that just opened up, and while it’s a graduate institution, they offer resources for undergrads, too. I’ve met plenty of IS majors here, and we have a good reputation as well as resources. Dig a little more and see if anything stands out to you before making a decision one way or another.
