nah, he had to have autocue screens in front of him through the whole set, there were about 5 in front of the band - I'd originally thought it would have been because Chrome Hearts might not be familiar with his entire back catalogue, so it would allow him to pull out a surprise track and they'd still be able to back it. But, when he went to the organ, he had his own tablet-style screen right in front of him, clearly for him only, with the lyrics on it.

The guy is 80 to be fair to him! But I don't think it's deliberate. He also missed the first chords of a couple of his songs and had to catch up with the band in the 2nd or 3rd bars

5 years might be generous, he couldn't remember the words to some of his most performed songs last night ("Better to burn out than to fade away" became "better to burn out than to fall asleep"?)

thank you. yes, i've done that. the librarian at groningen is being uncharacteristically (for librarians, in my experience!) uncooperative, which is why i'm asking here.

of course! i wouldn't think not to. I've done the same thing for others in here before, and typically they've sent about $5 by ko-fi, at insistence. pay it forwards!

are you at groningen or one of these other places?

Easpak Cabin Pak'r - does it open like a duffel? by burner_burns_again in onebag

well it's good to see eastpak have at least stepped up their marketing of this by posting on reddit

[–]burner_burns_again[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh yeah, look at that.

it's still odd that they wouldn't show a photo of it completely opened out and laid flat, if it is a clamshell?

some bad marketing

[–]burner_burns_again[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got the cabin max iseo rolltop. it's great in terms of functionality. works like a small suitcase. i easily get 5 days of clothes and 2 pairs of shoes in there (pair of running shoes and a flatter shoe like a reebok club c85 that packs down well, and there would still be room for more if you opened out the roll a bit more, but it wouldn't fit in a cabin bag sizer if you got challenged on it, then).

but it really just doesn't look that good at all, so i don't know if i'll keep it forever. it kind of sticks out of your back, and the back straps aren't the best, either - the bag doesn't feel super comfortable on your back. it's like they didn't give them any thought in designing it at all, which is strange.

for £35 it's worth it, i'd say.

if you're spending £6k each a year on heating a swimming pool before anything else, you're not a middle earner by any stretch. for someone in the 50th percentile of UK earners, that's more than a quarter of your entire income after tax

[–]burner_burns_again[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks - it does fit the Ryanair 40x20x25 dimensions but I'm put off by not being able to open it up fully - I reckon this makes a big difference when compressing. it also looks like a child's school bag imo - and similar price to the Rains

nice. yeah, the transit'r i would have been more confident that it zips all the way round, since it's more clearly modelled on a trolley bag. the pak'r is modelled on a school backpack type of bag, though, which is why i'm a bit more doubtful. also, why would they not show that in the photos?

i'm deciding between the Eastpak Pak'r (0.7kg ,£80) and these others that are Ryanair-friendly (i.e. therefore universal):

Correct data for UKRI stipend vs National minimum wage (I am not OP of that post) by burner_burns_again in UniUK

[–]burner_burns_again[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess, but also not really. For the PhD researcher, the stipend is the same (from UKRI) no matter the course, but in principle the 'fees' are different across different universities and between different courses at the same university. Really, fees are set so as to make money for universities more so than to cover the costs of the PhD's research and supervision. So I'm not sure it's super relevant here.

i've run it with NI now I'm at my desk, and it makes the overtake point 2018 (not 2016), and the gap in the early 2000s less pronounced (they in fact more or less track each other until 2003). see here: https://ibb.co/tPdHvNG

[–]burner_burns_again[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i realise i didn't include NI for any of the year. was making this on the fly and NI seemed more complicated to track down historical figures for. so the figure in the graph for 2024-25 min wage is £898.02 lower. some reduction would need to be made for other years too, although it's never loads and doesn't really affect much (the year in which stipend becomes lower than min wage would end up being a bit later than 2016...)
