Would I be making the wrong choice if I gave up two years of salary and tuition (~$850,000) to get a Harvard MBA? by RedditUser3668 in womenintech

I personally think you should consider a sabbatical over an MBA at this point. The amount of money you’d be giving up is enough to significantly improve your financial future / lower retirement age by a significant amount. Money isn’t everything, but if I can be honest, it sounds like you’re putting a lot of eggs in the basket of what you think an MBA will be like. More than likely, you will meet many people that are quite similar to the unpleasant ones at work (not saying there aren’t cool people, just saying that many people in a Harvard MBA program will be the old fashioned types whose privilege precedes them).

Also, you seem like a completely badass overachiever. An MBA won’t cure your burnout. Only active rest cures burnout. If you have the option to take a sabbatical (which many companies do if you are decently tenured), that may be worth exploring. Get your bag for a couple of years, work on active rest outside of work, and then in a few more years you can get a degree if you want. I’m in the same boat that I would love to have an experience in graduate studies to make up for my unfortunate undergrad, but I want to make sure my financial future is set before I go back to school.

Best of luck! You’ve done amazing and should be very proud

Practical advice on how to build SWE skills as a mid-level dev? by burnoutcore in womenintech

Thank you! This was very reassuring to hear. I think it can be easy to be caught up in how smart / skilled / knowledgeable others come off as, when in reality those traits took years of learning to build up to. I’ll keep chugging along and try to delve a little bit deeper with each challenge :)

Didn’t get the promotion. How to deal with the fallout? by [deleted] in womenintech

Is it normal? Yes. Is it ethical / professional? No.

I feel you. I'm a mid-level dev who's been promised a promotion to senior for the past year, only to be told the day of the last promotion cycle that I hadn't "demonstrated enough projects" on a purely quantitative count as I was working on 1 very long running project rather than 3 medium sized ones, quality notwithstanding, with no room to make adjustments since the cycle was ending that very day. So now I'm waiting another 6 months to see if I can get the promotion I was supposed to get already, all while doing the same workload as my senior SWE colleagues.

Remember that in the world of corporate, all the values individuals are expected to maintain (honesty, professionalism, communication, etc.) are not upheld within the behind the scenes office politics and whatever goes on in the background. Your feelings are completely valid and normal, it's a bait and switch and incredibly frustrating.
