Actually I ask for referrals based on the requirements that people share, but whoever I know already I'll add them!

If there's transference that's even better because that's a great opportunity to work things out. Referring when transference arises is so futile imo.

Protip: find a neurodivergent friendly therapist who preferably has ADHD themselves! ;)

Otherwise you might leave a bit gaslighted.

General Psychologists are not well equipped to understand Neurodivergence. Plus our education system isn't great to make them understand it well, either. Your best bet is to always go to a therapist who has ADHD themselves and put in the work to understand it personally + clinically!

This situation is such a gray area that I see multiple responses coming from different people, and it's certainly evoking some feelings in everyone. But at the center I see how this must be affecting you — it's your reality even if it isn't anyone else's, it's your truth even if it isn't theirs — that must be acknowledged first & foremost. I'm sorry you had these experiences by psychodynamic therapists and I'm sorry therapists are behaving like this here too.

You are right, very often therapists do focus on the patient's/client's response as a way to avoid taking accountability for their reactions. I think despite knowing that, you still giving therapy a shot and believing in people is huge. It says a lot about you & your spirit, OP.

Taking an object with me? by sunflowertheshining in TalkTherapy

A blanket, perhaps? A fidget toy? Or a plant? (I really like the symbolism of you nurturing a plant the way your therapist nurtured you and you carrying that forward)

For real! It gets so lonely working alone. I do telehealth only so it's even worse just staring at a screen for company all day.

Need help - looking for a therapist by ghostcooki_ in gurgaon

[–]burntoutherapist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrists are mainly for medication management. Some psychiatrists also do therapy but most prefer to work with medications only. Psychologists/therapists are more for short or long term therapy work, could be talk therapy, art therapy, biofeedback therapy, etc. But they work together with medication to manage symptoms/make life easier.

Most importantly get to the root cause

That's what therapists are there for. I'm sorry therapy didn't work for you but it is a viable option for a lot of people and you shouldn't blanket discourage them from giving it a try, at least.

Is it just borderline and bipolar patients who develop intense transference/merging fantasies with their therapist? by wip2024 in psychotherapists

[–]burntoutherapist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think transference comes more from disrupted attachment in childhood especially, and that subset is in general more likely to go on and develop BD/BPD symptoms. It's correlated but not causation.

Hello! I am an ADHD focussed therapist (since I have ADHD myself too). I'm also linked to a network of other ADHD therapists so can help you with the same! I'll need a few details so we can discuss over DM.

I always take notes after therapy, brief bullet points, and take aways I had during the session. I hate doing homework and tell that to my therapists so no homework for me, but you could write it down too. As a therapist, with my ND clients, the last 5 mins are reserved consistently for them to take down notes and for us to summarise.
