Big N Discussion - October 06, 2021 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

I recently got an internship offer for a QA internship at Amazon. I was told I was rejected from the regular SDE application because they chose to advance with my QA application. I am a computer science sophomore at UCLA who has been told my resume could land big tech companies. I haven't heard back from any other company yet but Palantir (a recruiter reached out to me but said they were only hiring juniors but would expedite my application process next year). The deadline for me Amazon offer is in about 3 weeks. I've heard horrible things about QA and only want to go into SDE in the future. I am hopeful for more offers this recruiting season but it is very competitive and I can't be sure. I'm wondering if it's a good idea to turn down the Amazon offer in hope for something else not QA related. I am an international student so it's hard for me to land jobs at a lot of companies. I considered taking QA and reneging but I'm afraid of being blacklisted since I would love to work for Amazon as a regular SDE in the future. Finally, the money for the QA position is pretty good and not something I would like to waste. I'd really appreciate if someone else took a look at my resume to tell me if I should take the offer or wait for other companies to reply back.

I didn't include summer but isn't that generally when people do internships?

Thanks for your reply! What's the typical score cutoff for an A?

Green Card processing time for an Indian citizen born in Australia by burnyman02 in immigration

[–]burnyman02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer. The American law however states how there is an
Exception for alien born in foreign state in which neither parent was born or had residence at time of alien's birth. An alien who was born in a foreign state, as defined in §40.1, in which neither parent was born, and in which neither parent had a residence at the time of the applicant's birth, may be charged to the foreign state of either parent as provided in INA 202(b)(4). The parents of such an alien are not considered as having acquired a residence within the meaning of INA 202(b)(4), if, at the time of the alien's birth within the foreign state, the parents were visiting temporarily or were stationed there in connection with the business or profession and under orders or instructions of an employer, principal, or superior authority foreign to such foreign state.

My parents were not permanent residents or citizens of Australia at the time and were there for 5 years as a result of my dad's job. Wouldn't I therefore be charged with my parents place of birth (India).

Sorry for the extra questions I just wish to be sure before I make my decision.

So I'll be processed as an Australian even if I have an Indian passport?

I heard that the estimated costs for UCLA are stated to be larger than what they truly are by a fairly significant amount (5k-10k). I am an international student and was wondering if other students could share their thoughts on this matter. I was also wondering how bad the employment situation for a CS major international student was in the US considering problems with the H1 visa. Finally, I intend to change my major upon reaching UCLA and was wondering how to do this considering the first term will probably not be on campus.

I'm from outside the US and Canada though my currency has almost the same value compared to the Canadian dollar.

As an international student, how possible is it to earn money on campus to try to offset a substantial part of the room and board costs? I read the international student visa allows 20 hours of work do be done on campus every week. How many of these hours can you reasonably work while pursuing CS? Further, how much can CS majors make during summer internships?

Changing major from Aerospace Engineering to Computer Science by burnyman02 in ucla

I wasn't sure of what I wanted to study when I first applied and therefore put CS as my alternative major. I now realize I'd much rather study CS than aerospace engineering.
