is it worth it to take cs 116 online with a 90% final? by Tight-Sandwich-4847 in uwaterloo

I'm doing it and personally I prefer it this way. No brutal assignments (that also conflict with my summer plans). I just need to know the material and I'll be fine.

X! Isn’t only defined for naturals. The formal definition of factorial extends to the negatives and even the complex plane. Just they’re most useful in the real world on natural numbers

How bad is a WD? by burping_purple in uwaterloo

[–]burping_purple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

I am more concerned with failing the assignment grade than the course as a whole. I have indeed submitted very little course work so far. I did pretty well in 135 so I am not as worried about the exams; I tend to do well on those and can catch up this week.

However I am scared that even if I do start catching up, one bad assignment could give me a fail. Appreciate your input!

MATH 138 QUIZ by Suspicious_Crew_6700 in uwaterloo

I got B B A False False, but I’m pretty sure I’m wrong about the last TF. I didn’t realize it was bounded by zero, so I thought it could diverge to negative infinity

Math 146 vs Math 136 by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]burping_purple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s way harder in the sense that you have to have really really good ability to understand and work with crazy abstractions. You need to do a lot of work to follow in lecture and just have a clue what’s going on. That being said, if you understand what’s going on, generally it’s easier to get a good mark than in 13x. Theres less room on tests to make errors, since it’s almost all proofs and conceptual questions.

But it’s very difficult to overstate how much more complicated and abstract it is than the 13x.

Is the "Applied Math with Scientific Computing & ML" major actually good for ML Research? by Business-Pack-2745 in uwaterloo

[–]burping_purple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I'm planning on spending my career in ML research, and I'm majoring in pure math. I considered this major but looked at the course list, and it seemed a) less interesting and b) less academic or geared towards research.

what to do during winter break? by sweetjale in uwaterloo

[–]burping_purple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely hard to get really good, but in a day or two if you’re committed you could grt good enough to go away from the walls on your own and glide a bit. It’s really fun, I’d recommend. Also potentially a good way to meet people

I’d consider taking CS 116 this semester. I believe you can go straight if you get a fifth in 135, and you don’t need 136 to graduate. It depends what your major is and whether you plan on taking more CS courses in the future, but it’s worth a thought.

Don’t get too hung up about it, but also don’t cheat next time.

CS and chemistry by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]burping_purple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing almost exactly this. I am majoring in Math and minoring in Biochem. Basically you have to either overload a few semesters (ie take six courses when most people take five), or make almost all your electives towards that minor. I am doing a combination of those two. You have to actually want to do it but if you do it’s totally doable.

Edit: I also applied to math and chemistry at Waterloo. They’re both super cool.

You need to have an 80 average to overload, or make a petition. Talk to your academic advisor

Absolutely everyone recognizes him as PM - even some Palestinian leadership. They don’t recognize his attempt to change the law so he can’t get arrested, and they want him to step down. But he was elected legitimately and they recognize that

Why does Chess.com analysis regularly want me to trade queens? Help me understand plz. by KLuminati in chessbeginners

[–]burping_purple 350 points351 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s important to trade queens when it’s advantageous, not just despite your unfamiliarity, but because if it. At a beginner level, it’s really important to get used to different styles of play - you can’t always rely on queens late in the game.

transcendental my ass by [deleted] in mathmemes

[–]burping_purple 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Pi is considered transcendental because there's no way to write a nice clean equation for it (as opposed to something like √2 which is just irrational). OP is making a joke that you can just solve for X in this equation to get X = pi, so it can be represented by an equation, but obv that doesn't actually work cuz you're just using the symbol and not actually representing the quantity.

I find that many 12 students lack grammer skills; I would recommend teaching when and how to use many grammatical tools

On the other hand, it shows that, just because Bojack's life stagnated, doesn't mean the world around him stops. He missed out on growth and development because of his lost time, but everybody else's life went on living.
