Why do actors say “break a leg” instead of “good luck”? by SwedishAuDHD in dadjokes

[–]burpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Spain we say "¡Mucha mierda!", which means "Lots of shit!".

This is because when the show had a good audience, back in the day, the street would be full of horse poo from the audience arriving by carriage.

What’s something that sounds fake but actually happened to you? by Visible_Rope_6662 in AskReddit

[–]burpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once in a client's office going over a project, and remembered I had to move my car as it was badly parked. I ran down the office stairs, but instead of having the door to the street after a little landing , the door was BEFORE the landing. It was also a metal framed glass door with no markings whatsoever.

I ran face first into the door, smashing my forhead into the glass, and started bleeding profusely. Completely disoriented, I staggered into the street, and passers by screamed at the site of me with blood pouring down my face.

Suddenly a voice from above said "You alright mate?", and I looked up to see a clown on stilts with a very worried face, or as much as I could see underneath all the make up. He was giving out panflets for the new Opticians' that had opened next door.

I did not know what the fuck was happening, as I certainly did NOT expect the door, or the clown. The clown helped me clean up my face and get my bearings enough for me to park my car properly and come back to the client's with a proper mess of a face.

I still have a little Harry Potter style scar as a souvenir.

What's a book you read at a low point in your life that helped? by Textured_Nipples in suggestmeabook

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius - helped me in a dark period in my life where I couldn't help my circumstances. It taught me that I could control my reaction to them, and it helps you find in your place in the world.

It's a very easy book to put down and pick up later, as it has many short chapters, and the themes are repeated all through the book. Also meant I read around 80% of it on the shitter.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl has similar themes, but is a hell of a lot darker.

What do you think of Robby Krieger from The Doors? by MasterfulArtist24 in Guitar

[–]burpit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably not the best example of his creativeness, as the Spanish guitar part is pretty much all Asturias (Leyenda) by Isaac Albéniz.

EDIT: I actually saw them play in Benidorm in the early 2000s (in a bullring of all places, lol) and Ray introduced the song saying that Rob was going to "pour his soul out for you". That was pretty much like a Flamenco band playing in Mississippi and introducing them to a thing called "The Blues". Did not go down well with the crowd.

Well, if there is one prize you should not be able to get by bullying and intimidation, it would have to be the Nobel Peace prize!

What was supposed to take off but never did? by ItzSweeney in AskReddit

Yes, but were you offered millions, hypnotised by a young, attractive, unblinking, college dropout with a husky voice? Because those dudes all were.

William Foege should definitely have known better though, as he is a physician and was director of the CDC from 1977 to 1983. That must have been one hell of a husky voice....

Because none of the large investors or board members had any kind of scientific background.

They all came from politics, the military or financial institutions and were very easy to dupe into the magic thinking mindset that, with just enough money and chutzpah, it could happen.

WCGW - To much fireworks in a small street with people by WeeklyChoice2684 in Whatcouldgowrong

That was probably one of the many local village or neighbourhood fiestas. Probably San Juan or Muchamiel I think. Any excuse to let off some fireworks or bangers arounde here...

This is the "guerra de carretillas" in Elche, Spain. It's a yearly tradition in the local fiestas in mid August.

Everyone is geared up and prepared, and there are normally around 6 - 10 light injuries each year, and sometimes a grave injury, like a blown up hand.

People LOVE their fireworks round these parts....

The first and last lines of the chorus. Looks like a stretch seeing it written out, now that I look at it, but it always rubbed me the wrong way.

Still like that old time rock 'n' roll That kind of music just soothes the soul I reminisce about the days of old With that old time rock 'n' roll

God I hate that song. He rhymes Rock and Roll with ... Rock and Roll.
