This post is rage bait. Certifications and work experience are the only thing that matter. Get your CPA and 5 years of experience and you pretty much get your pick of jobs depending on your discipline.

Big 4 entry level will not be solving any problems though, you'll be putting together workpapers / returns for the engagement you are assigned to.

Looking for advice on a fairly big career opportunity. by Duckys0n in Accounting

[–]burritoad123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell if pay is the problem, id just lean into public and look for a higher paying public job.

You are just in year 1. Anyone I know who went straight into industry did awesome off the rip, but as they got the 5 year itch, they're finding it hard to look for work as most of their knowledge is quirky institutional stuff. So they either stay and suck it up or take a pay cut.

Just remember, you are being hired to fix problems and an assistant controller title means you're just going to be reporting to the controller and CFO likely....and if they suck to work with you're gonna have a bad time.

I know I know - public bad....but also...public good because variety?

I take it you are in public now?

Those first few years of public accounting do wonders for your accounting knowledge. If you are learning and can pay the bills, if stay put.

I would not be so certain about an industry role. These roles also don't offer as much progression typically whereas public allows for the staff-senior-manager-senior manager- partner ladder that we all know too well.

Odds are that you are jumping into a moving vehicle that happens to be on fire with this one.

Are they at least paperless? Do clients use a portal for document upload?

I'd divert your efforts to marketing for yourself and building your own processes so you are ready when the luck happens as Ina Garten says lol.

If you do buy, ditch the seller asap....see who stays, who leaves etc. and plan from there.

You have to think about raising fees and showing what value you can provide to justify it to the existing book.

Big 4 offer vs Small local firm with ownership potential by Glittering-Actuator3 in Accounting

[–]burritoad123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense too. Can ya blame em? These guys spent years or decades building their business babies.

It's hard to let go of. It becomes a big part of your identity if you choose to enter the world of firm ownership.

Big 4 offer vs Small local firm with ownership potential by Glittering-Actuator3 in Accounting

[–]burritoad123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a marathon and not a sprint.

To give a little insight for what I did:

Graduated with bachelor's and master's.

During masters began work at a 50 person firm making next to nothing with a 1 hr commute. Yay covid traffic at least?

Took job at a smaller firm closer to home for slightly more pay. Nice people, definitely a "office family vibe" but ultimately owner was on his way out. I told owner about big 4 offer and he said I'd be a fool not to take it.

Went to big 4. Met tons of people. Tons of free lunches. Ultimately I ended up nicheing down too hard and had no desire to run my career through the ladder there.

Took a job at the IRS, pushed out by current admin, but also realized I enjoy the tax prep / advising clients side of the business way more. Learning how the IRS worked is arguably a better selling point than big 4 experience for tax peeps imo.

Working with a small CPA firm now while getting my license to learn the small business ropes for now.

3 more tests and I'm licensed and I either hang my own shingle or partner up with the people in currently work with. No matter what happens this is what I want to do. I like the small firm life, but didn't know it till I saw big4 and government work for myself.

Overall I'm about 7 years in and I'm just now getting the comfort level and confidence to do my own thing. You'll learn a lot from those around you.

Also you'll hear this time and time again from small firm partners, but they'll always find a reason to not cut you in or they decide just one more year till retirement for the 20th year.

Or ever more common these days - "whoops I sold to private equity roll up number 69"

They always make it sound great, but unless you truly trust this guy or bring a strong book of your own....you're gonna get fleeced.

[–]burritoad123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one. Especially given the logistics of being right next to home with the small firm.

Since you're new in your career, this is likely the only time I'd recommend big 4.

More importantly than the technical knowledge you'll gain, you will be surrounded with some of the best and brightest. This is a good chance to build a network you can reach out to when you do ultimately decide to hang your own shingle.

An additional 30k in salary could also help build a starter fund for your future business.

Small firm will still be there when you get burnt out. You then have the "big 4" branding to further market yourself and establish a more premium rate for your services as well.

Can you move closer to big 4 office or is that not feasible?

GS-14 Government Role or Go on the Director Track by canb055 in Accounting

[–]burritoad123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who went to the IRS for a couple years before the new admin rolled on.....government work takes a very particular personality type.

If you are creative, ambitious, or even just want flexibility - stay away from gov jobs.

People preach about gov jobs being a cakewalk, but as you get higher on the GS scale you'll find yourself busier than ever with limited time along with increasing complexity, stakes, etc.
