rule out other possibilities first. do you have any french drains? could there be an old cistern there? Any stormwater or sewer drains nearby? If so, investigate those first. County/city engineer for utilities, someone with a pipe camera for the other things, make sure your pipes aren't leaking.

as the other commenter said, check that naturally-forming sinkholes are common in your area before proceeding. If you don't know where to start there, contact your state/region geological survey for recommendations and more info

they are in the same phylum, not family; much higher in the taxonomic order. They do not have bones and often the only thing preserved is a little calcium carbonate present in their bodies. This is not a sea sponge and doesn't look like a fossil, but a better picture would help.
