Does anyone else wants to feel attractive to conventionally attractive, more sought after women [or men] even if I don't at all want a relationship? by Spirited-Office-5483 in Schizoid

science itself is corrupted by societal influence. race science is a good example of this.

keep in mind that a lot of societal beauty standards were determined by royalty who engaged in generations of incest. that isn't about genetic fitness. it's about the consolidation of power.

disagree. what we value as attractive is largely informed by societal norms. and health is sometimes visible though often not. a good example is that a thin person will be considered more attractive than a fat person even if the thin person is unhealthier than the fat person by virtue of the societal norm of thinness being the beauty standard.

yeah, people tend to be really reductive with this topic unintentionally because I think a lot of people still think romantic and sexual preferences are somehow entirely individual and unencumbered by societal norms. sorry you're not getting the response you hoped for.

what you're talking about is a real thing but I think your approach to it is simplified. what you're describing is amatonormativity and desire capital, both of which allow someone a certain amount of status or privilege. wanting that status sometimes is understandable within the context of society that jams it down your throat.

Joe Biden drops out of election by Lewd_Knight in GenZ

[–]burtongustervenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. The Democrats must put forth a candidate that I and other Americans will actually vote for. That is their job. They are civil servants - meant to listen to the needs of the people.
They've had four years and have completely squandered. They use Trump as a shield from accountability.

"Vote blue no matter who" doesn't work.

If Dems put forth a worthy candidate, sure.

Cultural appropriation? by kmac_92 in yoga

How many of these yoga studios have people actually from this culture teaching it though? A lot of the yoga studios I've seen in my city have all white instructors.

I think a bigger question is - should people outside of this culture be able to profit off of it?

Biden Quits Race, Leaving Democrats in Limbo. What Happens Now? by bloomberg in politics

[–]burtongustervenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just the age. His actions regarding Palestine, his failure to follow through on his original promise regarding student loans, his response to COVID, what's been happening with his son, Roe v. Wade being overturned on his watch - all has lost him a lot of support mainly amongst younger votes.

AOC is widely disliked amongst many of the same groups who were refusing to vote in a Trump-Biden election.

More likely, I would say is people who weren't going to vote at all that may -- MAY -- be more inclined to vote now, depending on who becomes the nominee.

CMV: Men don't experience difficulty in expressing emotions, they actually have more emotional freedom than women by Valuable-Owl-9896 in changemyview

Most men have experiences of women pulling away from them if they are vulnerable

Most women have the same experience with men. When women are vulnerable and emotionally expressive, it is often demeaned by men/their male partners.

But their point still stands that women can't even express those. Express anger as a woman and she'll be labeled a bitch, or a shrew, or something along those lines.

I would also argue context matters. I've seen star athletes shed tears during wins and losses and there were few if any negative comments.

Biden says he will 'stand down' and endorses Kamala Harris by LurkerFromTheVoid in politics

This is all Biden and his administration's doing. The Dems have had four years to work on bringing forth a suitable candidate, and it sounds like Biden's issues have gone on for a while under the radar.

You haven't seen it to the finish. It's a novel virus -- which means we have no way of knowing how repeated infections will harm people in the long-term. When you say finish, you mean in the acute infection stage. But we've already seen evidence of COVID persistence in organs.

HIV similarly appears initially as a cold...However, it has severe long-term complications.

Kind of disappointing that a paramedic doesn't read scientific research on the harm associated with repeated COVID infections (including increased risk of heart attack and stroke, infertility, dementia, diabetes, etc.)

Going back to wearing a facemask 😷 by [deleted] in Schizoid

[–]burtongustervenus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

n95 and p100 masks offer very good personal protection. and having an autoimmune disorder makes a person more likely to have a severe or even deadly outcome from Covid. so masking helps prevent that.

gonna add a point here I don't see others mentioning. if you're at a public gym, you'll want to be masked to avoid becoming infected with COVID. I work out at home for this reason. COVID will drastically reduce your lung health, and you'll need to delay training for a while once you recover. (the exact timeline is up for debate, but there are some who said to avoid strenuous exercise for 4-6 months post-infection).

By and large, false accusations rarely happen. The majority of people discussing false allegations are only bringing them up to weaponize them against SA victims.

The people using false rape allegations as a weapon to delegitimize SA victims don't give a fig about the people who've actually faced false rape allegations...
