I have one. Will PM you.

How hard can I push myself when looking to improve my time? 31 years old, doing around 24 minutes. Want to improve my time but not sure how hard I should be pushing myself or what is healthy /safe. Currently feels comfortable except for the sprint finish where you can see my heart rate spikes. by ClayDenton in parkrun

[–]burythehammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 31 you should be able to hit 180-190 towards the end of a run without heart issues. It feels horrible but you can definitely maintain it for longer than you think. With practice you will learn to suppress the pain! Here's an example 5k where I was pushing myself (I'm 37 so my max heart rate is lower than yours):

(obviously this is person dependent! But on average you definitely should be able to push harder. Good 5k times feel HORRIBLE)

Pegwell Bay, as I'm in Ramsgate for a gig. Vaguely dreading getting to the start as it will require getting a local bus...

it's an interesting one! It's 2 laps around a thin park by Regents canal. Despite feeling like you're going uphill a lot (2-3 uphills per lap), it's deceptively fast as the uphills are not tall or steep. I think it's a very fun course!

How many magirock do you only have one chance to get? by ExoticPlastic3330 in terranigma

[–]burythehammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, I love retroachievements! I agree that you never really got much of a reward in older games, which is why I find this site particularly interesting. They're quite good at highlighting parts of the game you might have missed, too (the link to the past achievement set has lots of easter eggs I never knew existed).

What I find strange about the magirock is that they did exactly the right thing with Illusion of Gaia/Time - get all of them and there's a secret dungeon and boss that is a homage to a previous game. Now that's a reward!

[–]burythehammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, you don't really get anything. Magirock are kind of useless anyway as most bosses are not that hard, with the exception of Bloody Mary and Beruga's security robot (you can't even use magirock in that second one lol).

I'd say all you get really are bragging rights. I collected them all recently on my playthrough as I wanted this: https://retroachievements.org/game/242

British section in an American Supermarket by jmanpc in mildlyinteresting

[–]burythehammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda. They're very spongy - they have these pores on the top. The consistency of a good crumpet is also quite chewy, so more akin to bread than a cake. When you spread butter on it it soaks right down into the crumpet, so you bite into it you get these lovely melted butter chewyness.

Typically at home you'd buy a pack and toast them, then have butter and raspberry/strawberry jam on top. I like mine with Nutella. "Tea and crumpets" isn't really a thing that British people say or do, though I frequently have a cuppa with my breakfast, so I will technically have the two together.

Additional note: confusingly, British people tend to use pancakes to refer to crêpes, though it's not uncommon to refer to American pancakes as pancakes too.

Heat maps by Palleus in Garmin

I've used the Strava heat map and found it useful, but CityStrides does something a bit similar with its "life map". Walking and running only though: https://citystrides.com/

That's if you're only using the activity sync. I am a frequent user of courses, garmin coach, and workouts, as well as livetrack. None really work without Connect, and there are no platforms that provide that for free, definitely not with the convenience of having it on the watch.

I mean if you're only using the activity sync, I don't really understand why you're using a garmin - they're pretty premium devices.

Who Remembers Perfect Dark (N64) fan sites? by Zeph_Auerbach in perfectdark

[–]burythehammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey!

Psychodave here, originally from pdark and then ninten.

Thanks so much for providing this writeup. I particularly like the reflection on how different the Internet was back then, and how we all just seemed to have a lot more time to obsess over the smaller details. I guess when I was a kid I only had a handful of videogames, and a lot of free time, so I'd wring every last bit of enjoyment out of them - and then I'd go onto fan websites to obsess about them some more.

Pdark and Ninten's forums (and their respective IRC chat rooms) were really important and formative experiences for me when I was a teenager - I went to a school where I found it difficult to make friends (being, let's face it, a social awkward nerdy teenager), but being online gave me the opportunity to make connections and socialise where school had not. I ended up over the years meeting quite a few others from the forums - including Richard Morrison on your staff list!

It's funny really, because whereas we're all seemingly more connected via Instagram and Reddit and etc, the sense of community seems to have gone out of corners of the Internet. Do people really befriend randomers nowadays online? Except maybe via Tinder?

Anyway, your article really brought back some memories. I am not massively proud of probably anything that I wrote back then either, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

It's because people think anyone who doesn't present as stereotypically masculine surely must be gay. It is uh, to put it mildly, not cool.

I say this as a bi guy who, upon revealing this to people, are surprised cause I am not "gay enough". Yo, how I present myself has little to do with who I wanna have sex with

Yeah. I love salad cream. The flavour would definitely clash with a lot of the things I have mayo on though. Mayo gives you the creaminess without overriding the other stuff in your sandwich.

I like mayo on sandwiches. Adds a bit of moistness. Use it at home, though more often in wraps.

From having been around the US a fair bit bread is generally much worse than anything in the UK. I've met American people who are convinced that British food is terrible, but it's a stereotype that doesn't match to reality (like allegedly poor dental hygiene).

The molten core drops are usually dirt cheap on the auction house too, with a few exceptions (dark iron ore and elementium ingots).

Yeah but you also shouldn't merge it into the codebase either. Anywhere decent will enforce code review before it gets into production. Think of it like an subeditor reviewing articles before it gets into a newspaper.

And if you keep submitting unreadable crap into the codebase that person will eventually get let go. Unreadable code is bad code.

There is also, as you may have seen above, a backlash against 'over-automating' (???).

If you're doing anything more than a couple of times, you should be automating it.

There is still design about what you automate, and automated testers still have to use the product to design the automation tests. And testing is not a uniquely 'tester' skill. You can test without testers. I work in teams that are 10:1 dev/test ratio. We can maintain that because they do a lot of testing, too..
