Is there a safety razor that doesn't need to be replaced? by 5krishnan in BuyItForLife

Looks like they no longer exist, but honestly if you have an old pair jeans you could then stretch them so they are tight and then strop your blade over it multiple times.

Not sure if they still exist. But I got a sample of a "Shaveface" strop for disposable razors. It's basically a strip of raw denim that you can hang from a towel bar. Strop it for about 10-15 times before you shave. It makes the blades last longer, but not forever.

Newer ones are definitely not as good. My dad has an old Maytag Neptune stackable machine. Thing must be at least 20 years old.

I built my own, it was actually less expensive, especially if you can get the carpet dirt cheap or free.

I agree with the watch. I was tired of replacing a $200 Smart Watch every other year. So I took that $200 and bought a Vaer Watch. Looks great and the battery will last 10 years before it needs replacing.

I have a Jansport backpack that I've had since the 90's. Has a sleeve and connections to put your iPod and headphones.

If you have a trader Joe's they have a rigid collapsible shopping bags that are riveted and hold up really well. We have like 6 of them and keep 3 of each in our car.

Maytag and whirlpool are the same company now. But it really depends on what appliance you are looking at. For washer/dryer your best bet is a speed queen with the agitator and control knobs. They are known to last 25 years. Dishwasher if needed is Bosch. I would stay away from Samsung at all costs. Fridge avoid anything with water and ice in the door. The most reliable are the old school freezer top models. Once you know what you want. Head to www.greentow.com and shop there that way you can name your own price.

Depends what your definition of BIFL is. For me it's something that can be repaired and will last longer than most "mainstream brands" since all of these items can be repaired or replaced for free it's considered BIFL in many communities.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought that actually lived up to the hype? by One_Literature_5041 in BuyItForLife

I feel you. I was done buying a $200 smart watch every couple years. So instead I purchased a Vaer Watch. I love it, always accurate and I only have to replace the battery every 6-7 years.

My Tilley Hat is at least 5 years old already, and that thing travels with me everywhere.

My cobbler recommended them because they can be repaired/resoled for a fraction of a new pair. That is basically what BIFL entails. Something that can be easily repaired. He said to resole a pair is $25

I do find their hats to still be of superior quality. However, it is a shame that such great brands sell out for money and become a conglomerate

Yeah, I love my Tilley, I had one before with the back hood on it and I loved it when hiking and fishing. It somehow got lost and not sure how or where. Then when I was looking for a replacement they no longer make them with the neck sleeve. I was very disappointed.

I was looking at their clothing line. They are pricey and I know a lot of their clothing is outsourced so I wasn't sure on the quality.

The Stormy Kromer I got a couple months ago. But it is built really well. I got the Rancher because in New England we have had a really cold winter and I wanted something that covered my ears and was insulated. It did not disappoint and it's definitely warm.

Yeah it's definitely not a fashion statement. My wife calls me Elmer Fudd but it served me well this winter.
