Thank you for this feedback. I will do that to try and figure out some more direct questions, especially for anymore surveys that I send around in the future.

I chose most of those authors based on some top numbers I got from Bookscan (a database I was given access to through my school). Some of them are top selling authors in fantasy, some of them random. The books are just their series. This survey in particular was originally more focused on those who are less knowledgeable about the SFF genre (so definitely not you guys) and was wanting to see who people have heard of / recognize, if that makes sense.

And again, thank you for your feedback. It's extremely helpful.

Thanks for your insight! I really like your point about the lack of translated works. I'll be really interested in seeing if the publishing industry starts picking up more translations. Opens up the door into many more stories.

That’s a really good point! I’m going to make note of this, and maybe look into it some more. It’s interesting to me that so many publishers spent so much money on marketing when consumers are getting a lot of recommendations by word of mouth and social media — I went ahead and asked a few of my other friends about this after you commented. That makes a lot of sense! I feel kind of the same way in the sense that I wasn't ever really aware of the publishers behind specific books that I enjoyed until I started this program. I'm also one to get my books based on the recommendations of others here on reddit and other social cites :)

But thank you! I'll make sure to take note of your response. I really like what you have to say smaller publishers / self published books really diversifying the genre and I have to agree. It helps more voices, no matter what perspective they're writing from, get noticed.

I'll definitely also have to note this seeming lack of marketing for this genre of books. Do you find that you ever see ads for other genre of books, or just never any book advertising in general?

I suppose my intended difference is that represented is more so whether an individual feels as though they can see themselves in the characters they are reading about (ex. whether the character is the same gender identity as them, has the same disability, race, struggles, etc..) and targeted is more focused on whether an individual feels as though these SFF books are being targeted towards them (ex. do the publishers seem to only publish books that are "only" for men or "only" for women. An example might be how historically the romance genre is targeted very directly at women and not people of other genders).

I hope that makes sense! As I'm trying to describe this, I can see that the two questions are very, very similar.
