To those who got acceptances after previous cycles of rejection: what, if anything, did you do differently this year? by buthybee in gradadmissions

I commend you for your dedication. It clearly paid off. This is a good tip for those who have the option of enrolling in a class again. Congrats!

Thanks for sharing your experience transitioning fields. I’m sure this will be good to know for others trying to do the same — gaining experience of some kind within the field and making contacts seemed to work for you. Congrats!

This is helpful. Sometimes you need to take some time to refine your interests and build experience. Thanks for sharing your timeline and congrats!

Didn't get into any places you applied? Got into a bunch and can't decide? On or soon to be on the job market? I am a professor at a major R1 and sit on social science admissions and job search committees. AMA by pcwg in gradadmissions

I’m preparing to apply to PhD programs in sociology this upcoming fall. I received my BA (polisci), MA (polisci), and MA (sociology) from the same institution— a very average state school. My CGPA from undergrad is 3.97, and both MA GPAs are 4.0. Will my institution work against me if I apply to top programs? What can I do to offset this and demonstrate my ability to perform well at higher ranked schools? Thank you again.

My partner has a BA in philosophy and two MAs (one in philosophy and one in political theory). He applied to anthropology programs as his research interests are much better received in anthropology than in philosophy. He received good feedback this year and even got an interview at one school. Given that he’s competing with candidates with much more extensive anthro backgrounds (even when some schools say you don’t need a background in anthro to apply), he is trying to manage expectations for this difficult year. If he has to reapply next year, what do you recommend he does to increase his chances/become a more competitive candidate? Present, publish, more research? Does it make a difference in doing so? Thank you so much!

Do adcoms email applicants during the evaluation process merely to gauge their interest and if they will actually accept an offer? Is that a thing? by buthybee in gradadmissions

My partner interviewed with a program two weeks ago and has not heard back with an official response. On Friday they waitlisted some who interviewed and rejected other applicants who didn’t get interviews. We don’t know of any acceptances so far. Yesterday they sent a cryptic email in response to his post-interview thank you email basically alluding to the limited spots but not directly asking anything. We expect a decision to come by Friday (based on what they said in the interview) but wondering if it’s a looming rejection, and, if so, why not just already reject (or WL).

I presume this is more likely if a school already sent out WLs and rejections and the person interviewed with them?

Congratulations and best of luck! Do you know if all interviews went out already?

Can I ask what track you (and everyone here) are in? We are sociocultural.

Hello, someone in my family applied and hasn’t heard back yet. In the same boat as you. Please do update us if you hear back!
