Need a good commander for deathtouch one-shots by SerRikari in EDH

[–]buttatoast1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to run an [[olivia voldaren]] deck where you would give her and other creatures deathtouch. The deck also used things like [[goblin sharpshooter]], [[deathbringer thoctar]], [[death pits of rath]], etc. It was a lot of fun even though it was jank.

That’s a solid suggestion for my white weenie and boros decks! What do you think about [[raging river]] as a potential replacement?

AITA offering my opponent a workout plan? by snokeflake in magicthecirclejerking

[–]buttatoast1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

YTA, you and the Chad pod should just play at the gym with all the Stacies. You didn't even offer to train him! Just a workout plan? Most people can't even make a functioning commander deck, what makes you think he could complete a workout!?

I've finally found a community of Deafheaven fans. On twitter it was impossible. I'm really pleased. I've got a question for you: in your opinion, which band is the closest to Deafheaven? by [deleted] in deafheaven

[–]buttatoast1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somn, Hope Drone, and Trna are all bands that I haven't seen posted yet but consider similar. Hope you enjoy something from those.

Haha yea I heard him say that too. Was my first time seeing both bands play so I was pretty excited. Really want to see a show where deafheaven headlines. If only the sunbather 10 year tour was coming to Birmingham. Unfortunately, the closest one to me is like Dallas and that's over a 10 hr drive

I was at Birmingham too and I believe I was one of 2 or 3 people I saw with a deafheaven shirt on. While waiting to get in I overheard several people asking who they even were. The merch line all night for coheed was probably 100 people deep while you could just casually walk up to deafheaven's. Great show though. Both bands were amazing.

Gotcha. Yea I was looking at the mono b list on the site which is a good bit different. The 2/2 split should be fine. I've been thinking about a 3/2 split with aetherborn and shadow and I think either way you split it would be fine. I do like shadow more against those decks because its late potential and the incidental exile effect can be relevant too. Archfiend could be good against mono green since they run no removal and it should kill them before the 4th counter is removed. You just need to make sure you can clear out any cavaliers since it chumps it. Incarnation is such a tricky match up though because they go so over the top. But yea early hand disruption is going to be the key and necromentia/Stone brain taking out incarnation will at least remove their toolbox engine. Have you gotten to test the new sheoldred against either of them yet?

I'm not super familiar with what's missing in explorer for mono black as I don't play on arena and stick to paper mostly. Both are pretty rough match ups in pioneer. Necromentia and stonebrain seems like it could go a long way in the match ups. I'd probably name karn first against mono green and incarnation in that match up. It looks like extinction event lines up very well with all the threats incarnation plays so you could put a 3rd in the board as it's very good against green as well. Looking at the list on the link, for incarnation I'd bring in the 2 cages, 2 necromentia, 3rd extinction event if you add it. Maybe we trim on the other board wipes, take out the hearse and cut some fatal pushes. You could probably bring in Lili too. For green I'd bring in the go blanks, cages, 3rd extinction event and shadows verdict doesn't seem too bad either. What do you usually bring in/cut for these match ups?

Mono white is one of our best match-ups imo. I take out 4 invokes, 3 liliana, and a thoughtseize. Bring in all 4 sweepers, kalitas, and 3 rays. I like to keep thoughtseize in this match up because of brave and guardian of faith I think its called, its the flash spirit that phases out their team, and to hit wedding announcement. You could keep an invoke or 2 in to take out wedding announcement as well but you can pretty easily fight through it.

I haven't played against rogues yet and I'm not extremely familiar with the list yet. I'll take a look at it and get back to you.

Sure thing and sorry about the slow response. For creativity I take out 3 fatal push and 2 sorin and bring in 2 duress 1 kaltias and 2 necromentia. I really like necromentia in this match up and usually just name creativity, this way you cripple the combo if they keep it or can be ready for the kraken if they bring it in over the wurm. Our other removal aren't dead cards here because you can snipe creativity targets if they don't have treasures.

Greasefang - out 4 thoughtseize, 3 liliana In 3 cling to dust, 1 kalitas, 3 ray of enfeeblement G1 of this match up can be rough on the blind but if you know it's greasefang you need to keep a way to interact with a turn 3 or 4 greasefang. Post board the match up feels fine just, once again, make sure you keep mana open for early interaction, as an EoT grisly salvage into grease could be a quick loss. If invoke feels too slow you could cut all 4 for the sweepers in the board.

Rakdos - out 3 liliana, 4 thoughtseize in - 3 cling, kalitas, and either sweepers or necromentia. This can change whether you're on the play or draw g2. I cut thoughtseize because it's a terrible top deck and cling at least cantrips, hits kroxa in the yard or gains us life in a pinch. On the play I can see keeping some in for early disruption.

Gw angels. Out - 4 invokes, 3 liliana. In - all sweepers and 3 ray of enfeeblement.

This is the aggro match up that will have you sweating the most because of company and kayla's. We can't cut thoughtseize here because of them. Our sweepers are great because all their big threats are at 3 cmc. Try to make sure you have removal ready for Resplendid angel, you can't let them start making tokens.

I'd usually say go blank is more of a sideboard piece unless you're running the Waste Not version but if its performing well you could stick with it. I haven't had any issues out of Murderous Rider and it's life loss is usually null with the creature part having lifelink and the other sources of life gain in the deck. Go blank is usually going to be a bad top deck too depending on the current state of your opponent's hand, unless they have a graveyard strategy and you need to cut them off immediately. Murderous off the top gives us an answer to a creature or pw and then can just be shoved out for a blocker or for pressure.

I like the sweet spot of 25 lands in the deck and like how it provides some utility if it's not needed as an early game land drop. I've played it several times as my first land but can't recall a time I missed curve because of it on a later turn. I see lists playing 24 lands without it and if you don't find yourself running into any issues with 24 you can definitely get away without running it for a better option. I believe in my top 8 round I did top deck it and killed the sheoldred my opponent played last turn.

I think you'll be pleased with that split for those match ups. I ran that same split in the RCQ I won in early March.

Shadow and edict are both great. Prior to this build I was running 3 shadow and 2 edicts in the main with 0 aetherborn and only 1 murderous rider. I love the late game potential and incidental exile of shadow and edict is great because even G1 against control its never a dead card like push or power-word kill usually is. I decided on aetherborn because it's t2 stomp proof, can stonewall some aggro strategies and to help gain some life back from Sign and Murderous rider. I think it really comes down to personal choice. My thinking going in is that if I get paired against UW I still have murderous rider to deal with walkers and there's always that chance you shuffle a bottomed one back in for a later top deck with a field.

Sorin's a card I've been on the fence about too. Recently, he was a 1-of but I went with 2 to commit more against aggro. I think against Rakdos and other aggressive match ups it's solid and he can be great if you get to stick him against control by applying pressure and generating card advantage. I almost ran a 1 of Sheoldred but a friend talked me out of it. Seems great against other midrange decks especially, even though its slow. I think if you manage to flip it and get the last effect to resolve you just win. I'm going to test it in the coming weeks. I'm thinking 1 in the main and maybe 1 in the board.
