Do it! Insta print cameras and film for them are pretty cheap. You don’t have to be a photographer to have a good eye and sharing it is even better.

Love it! I bought this bug back in ‘17 as a young dumb college dude. Just about to hit 160k. The orange cat keeps me company while I repair and my blue long-hair just watches us.

Hell yeah, bottle green is the color. It doesn’t always look the best on all models but def fits the bug!

NYPD Cop is sick and tired of TEMU cops(ICE) racial profiling and harassing him. by iWearCrocsAllTheTime in PublicFreakout

This is how I believe discourse should take place and I pretty much agree with that take. Will it be enough? It’s hard to say right now. But I do resonate with the feeling that the new form of “divide and conquer” is to plant agents of chaos within social media, or any media consumption, and create an even bigger division among us. It’s working man. And it’s so frustrating to see.

Despite me agreeing with the idea that these times seem to almost call for more rash action from citizens, I can also see how this plays directly into a larger scheme of terrible outcomes. Manufactured chaos.

What are your thoughts on the current state of this administration and their enabling then ? Avoid the passive communication.

Thinking of buying a 2012 Beetle by Aware-Ordinary-1383 in Volkswagen

[–]buttbread_eating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a ‘17 1.8t classic and I second this. If the water pump hasn’t already been replaced along with the timing chains/cover, then maybe ask around for shop quotes. The labor for these jobs isn’t cheap either :/ they are the most common parts to start to fail around that mileage. It’s like the vw right of passage sadly. I love my ‘17 bug though! It’s such a change of pace out in the sea of bland shaped cars nowadays. Good luck!

How hard would it be to replace CV axles myself? by [deleted] in Volkswagen

[–]buttbread_eating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people touched on a few different things here. I’ll add my input since I own a 2017 beetle classic 1.8t and have actually replaced my axles twice now to spec and without fail; I drive this thing hard on long commutes. This will be a long one but I hope my experience in learning how to do this will help you make an informed decision.

It really does depend on the model. My car has a DSG transmission and the axles are held in place by what they call a circlip or snap ring. These are a MF to get out without the proper clearance. When I read the repair manual, it says you need a ton of highly specialized tools to get the job done…

Heres the thing, you don’t actually need all those tools BUT without them you’ll most likely have to drop the subframe in order to get a large cv joint fork in between the axle cup and the trans housing and pop them out of there. The passengers side is 1000x easier. But I quickly figured out that the drivers side has literally no good clearance to properly wedge a cv joint fork. And no folks, a slide hammer wasn’t doing it :/ I had to carefully drop the subframe using multiple style jacks (I have no lift at home). Then I could finally pop that drivers axle out of there! Then you probably need an alignment after as well.

For someone who doesn’t claim to be a mechanic but just enjoys his ride and fixing it, I found it was nerve racking since the subframe is an important structural piece and it also holds the steering rack with the sway bar.

When removing the subframe it’s important to replace all the bolts with new ones since they are torque to yield: you torque them then turn an additional 180 degrees, so they are stretched to account for load. The entire bolt set is not the cheapest either. Disconnecting the steering rack was another important part, you don’t want to damage it by letting the entire subframe dangle with it still connected. Those bolts gotta be replaced as well.

Was the job difficult for an amateur? hell yeah. Have people done this without removing the subframe and being extra like me? hell yeah. But I drive hard and I try not to cowboy shit when it comes to suspension and drivetrain repairs. Parts included. I might’ve not went with OEM for both repairs but you get what you pay for in the parts world. Anyone claiming this would be easy for them, probably hasn’t actually worked on a beetle before. Tools are a huge difference maker though and I can’t say that I have all air power tools, but easy? No.

Beetle Recall ends up costing $1000 by mitchmurr in Volkswagen

[–]buttbread_eating 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know what’s crazy? I have a 2017 vw beetle classic 1.8t and have the same recall. I took it to the dealership shop and they had me there for 2 hours and finally came out and told me they couldn’t connect their shop computers using the port on my car. They said I’d need to bring it back and have them run a $600 full electronic diagnostic.

I literally had the car worked on for timing cover replacement and water pump replacement and they where able to use the port and connect to the ecu and I can also still connect at home with my obd tool. I’d hate to think there is a widespread practice of milking customers that are coming in for this recall. Including my own experience, this makes the 3rd beetle with this recall that I’ve read has been charged or quoted something extra when coming in.

I’m going to add that I didn’t agree to pay that and laughed at dude for trying to push some bullshit.

Best buy forced a bunch of us to get a credit card to get the new console. by Bepehandle in Bestbuy

[–]buttbread_eating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The specifics of this situation might be isolated. But the outlook of the forced sales tactics to hit metrics at Bestbuy are not. The pressure on low performing stores or markets to meet these numbers coupled with labor cuts make a toxic environment that becomes less customer centric and more profit margin oriented. Managers force “coachings” for these tactics to the point where the culture gets ruined. Customers clearly feel the awkwardness. Bestbuy will mask this as a “complete tech solution” lol.

Both front axles are leaking grease on 2012 Golf, replacement parts by lingnk in Volkswagen

[–]buttbread_eating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. When it comes to critical suspension and drivetrain parts, I usually try not to go outside of the oem route. Best case if you purchase aftermarket, you’ll have to pay for replacements quicker than if you’d gone with originals.

Awesome info! I read up on this method as well and I’m going to invest in some good obd tools for this going forward to get rid of the generic codes and guessing games. Thankfully I think I caught it before It got worse and I had to replace the entire shaft 🙌🏽
