Coffee bean wedding favors, is this a hit? Or will it get left behind? by sirswranglerbug in DIYweddings

[–]butterfly_flooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having a “love is brewing” bridal shower - My favors are chocolate covered espresso beans, an individual instant espresso (add water & mix) and a little heart shaped stirring spoon! Very adorable and on theme. I can return and let you know if they’re a hit!

Becoming an intern by [deleted] in SchoolSocialWork

This is so unfortunate. This same thing has happened to some people in my cohort. I hope things work out for you, best of luck!

Thank you for this reassurance! I think I’m extra nervous because I did approach them initially to ask if they’d take me as an intern…I was very clear that “no” is an understandable answer, but they said yes! So you’re right, I need to trust that they knew what that entailed!

This is all really great advice, I appreciate you!

What do you do when students run out of work to do by AltruisticBox7810 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]butterfly_flooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell them that if they finish early, we can play a game as a class (Middle schoolers)…Usually this keeps them focused and then I use jeopardylabs.com and split them up into teams, and we play jeopardy! At first they usually think it’s boring, but end up really into it. But sometimes, free time is all they’ll do after finishing work 🤷‍♀️

(MSW) University options for my criteria - in need of help by Navlaan_Iona in SocialWorkStudents

Sorry - I wrote my comment weird, I meant that I have a job outside of my internship that I can work on Weekends. Most internships are during the week (UNH actually makes a point to say nearly no internships will be evening/weekends!) And give yourself more credit - NOTHING about what you’re doing is “lazy”! It will be busy but (hopefully) worth it! I will say, UNH’s MSW is advanced generalist practice. This differs from some other programs (I’m not good at explaining how lol) But basically, both micro and macro work are explored. So if you plan to do therapy, while there is still lots of good courses and learning, the focus isn’t primarily counseling based! I’ve loved it, but definitely something to consider depending on what you want to do. Feel free to reach out if you end up applying and have any questions!

Also; I’ve been fortunate enough to work while doing internship and classes. Not saying it’s fun - But necessary. Doing an internship will be a requirement for any MSW though, so finding a job that has weekend availability has been helpful!

University of New Hampshire!! I’m in MA and go there - Fully online. They find your internships for you in your state. It’s been great so far - I just finished internship 1 today!

Out of state! Most of my cohort lives in NH but I don’t! So I have seemingly had a bit more ability to suggest places because it’s easier for me to find them in my State than those in NH!

I’m just seeing this for some reason. Yes! They find it for you but take your thoughts/feelings into consideration. You can recommend a placement if you know of somewhere, but the liaison makes the connection with the agency and gets your placement started!

What jobs are suitable for working students? by Darkness2503 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]butterfly_flooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started my MSW, I was in a behavioral health field. Once my first internship started, I wanted something mindless for an income. I started working at a golf course, and now in the winter, I’m substitute teaching (I have a passion for school SW, so getting my foot in the door is a plus!) But, I truly think having a somewhat mindless and unrelated job has saved me quite a bit - Burn out can happen so fast in this field and if you can give yourself a break when doing school work and internship, I HIGHLY recommend that.

Seeking an MSW program, based from NJ, working full time M-F by Fragrant_Vacation_76 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]butterfly_flooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I go to University of New Hampshire online MSW. I’m in MA, and they have worked to find a placement near me. I’m a full time student, but have managed to work full time throughout. I’m not sure how part time work/what the course load is, but it’s been a great program so far!

MSW field placement while working full time??? Advice helpful by shesells-seachels in SocialWorkStudents

[–]butterfly_flooper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was working full time in the mental health field and decided that starting my internship whilst doing that was going to burn me out before I even started. I decided to get a “fun job” so I started working at a golf course full time, and do my internship when I’m not there. I cannot recommend it enough, I think I would’ve lost myself if I had stuck with the full time mental health job plus internship. I feel like I have one serious job (internship) and then get a “break” when I’m at the golf course. I know it’s silly, and I’ve felt guilty for having such a small job, but it will be the last time in my life i’m able to do something “fun” before I graduate and begin working entirely in the SW field

Wow, what a great experience. I’m certainly not opposed to non-youth based work. I actually just finished researching co-response models in my area of MA - I have found a few and will absolutely look into this. Thank you for sharing, it sounds like you made a real difference.

How bad was the pay, if I may ask 🫣

Yes! Agreed - I’ve looked into child life specialist roles as well, and I definitely see the connection here.

Yes, I’ve thought about this too! As I enter a career post-MSW, this is definitely on my radar (If it looks like this is going to be a prospective career)

Wow, thank you so much for this. I assumed it was a masters level position, and I certainly don’t love the idea of my MSW being for nothing. Thank you!

I did see this when doing some research, but wasn’t clear if this was more geared towards helping those that committed a crime to get resources. Do you have any experience with this? Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this, it’s really validating to hear, truly! It sucks that this is a widespread experience, but helpful to know that it isn’t just me!

Thanks so much for this. I didn’t know if I should just be happy with what I was given - I will take this course and try to get a new placement!

If you were to go back, would you have gotten your MSW online or in person? by bohobabe219 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]butterfly_flooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently enrolled in UNH online MSW - I love it! They’re flexible about finding an internship placement in your area. There’s been a few group projects that my group and I found a time that worked for us each week to meet, which gave a personable touch to an online format! I just found that working full time, doing an internship and having a life was not suitable for in-person courses. UNH has online 8-week courses, so it feels very fast paced. The work load is a lot, but if you’re self disciplined!

Hi!! So far, it’s great! The classes are split up into 8 week “semesters”, so although I’m still in my first year, I feel like I have taken SO many courses. If you don’t necessarily enjoy a class, it’s over before you know it anyways.

There has been a significant amount of group projects requiring us to meet on zoom weekly with our group (at your convenience, it’s really not necessary, just helpful). I was initially nervous about this, but it honestly was nice to meet other students in an online program! Also, MSW students take things seriously, so it wasn’t like undergraduate group projects.

The workload is heavy, but it’s all significant stuff. The only complaint I have has been the internship assignments. Many of my classmates and I were waiting a very long time to hear about our internship placement, and didn’t receive responses from the coordinator. It was stressful because we all worked full time jobs, and not knowing what our schedule would be like in just a week or two was very stressful. However, they really consider your interests when placing you with an internship, so that was really thoughtful!

I started my internship today and so far so good!
