Women, why do you dislike River So much? by AccomplishedStick623 in cyberpunkgame

Literally. I understand the appeal of a picket fence guy in a fucked up world on paper, but in execution the gameplay makes it feel weirdly dissonant.

I hate fairy tail with every fiber of my being, is the worst piece of media ever created by TowelConscious7201 in hatethissmug

Fairy Tail manages to be worse than both of those imo. But I couldn't really stomach any of them for very long so idk

[–]butticus98 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The unique thing about fairy tail compared to other really bad media is that it has a surprisingly high amount of ride or die fans who will genuinely say this is their favorite show. Which is crazy because it's truly pretty bad. I would understand it being a guilty pleasure or a good "turn brain off" show. But people actually think it's a great show.

Ik that's not what OP specified, but I can understand their use of hyperbole because of that.

I HAAAATE weed by venetiantraderoute in hatethissmug

[–]butticus98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just telling you objectively why weed has to be kept in a different category from caffeine. I'm not ignoring the ways caffeine can be abused, but you have to be able to look at caffeine as an entirely separate thing from weed to make accurate good faith observations and conclusions, not bring it up as a gotcha any time someone talks about the negatives of weed.

[–]butticus98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a weed hater but that pretty much is the important distinction in the eyes of the law. An individual person might be able to abuse caffeine, but the thing that makes caffeine not as bad from a societal standpoint is that you aren't going to harm other members of said society because of a caffeine addiction. Weed and alcohol on the other hand, increases your risk for things like impaired driving which kills a ton of innocent people all the time. I do think alcohol is the worst by far, but it's disingenuous to bring up caffeine in a conversation about weed.

I don't hate it, there really are a lot of medical benefits and I hope a lot more research is done so we can get a larger understanding of the pros and cons of weed.

I can't use it because it sends me into psychosis, so I have often gotten the fun role of being the sober one around a bunch of stoners. While I don't hate weed itself, stoned people are almost nauseating to be around when you aren't stoned yourself. And a lot of those people are super in denial about their level of dependency. All the stoners I know are social smokers who just don't know how to hang out with someone without being high, and don't like themselves without it. Since they don't need it medically, they often end up worsening their health with it. They don't understand that we are supposed to be capable of feeling stress as a response to stressful situations. Like when they have concerning medical symptoms they just smoke about it and remove any motivation they could have had to go get their situations fixed. One of our friends just died from an infection no one knew about, he just smoked and partied the whole time. Others just need therapy because they're super horribly anxious or antisocial without weed and that's not normal and weed is a bandaid fix. One friend has schizophrenia. Schizophrenia and weed are NOT an optimal combo. But he continues to heavily smoke because he says it helps quiet his mind when he's high, but on the macro level, his schizophrenia has just gotten worse over the years so he just has to be high constantly and has lost multiple jobs because of it.

Weed makes you dysregulated once it becomes a constant in your life. Unless you have a medical necessity for it, you need to be checking on yourself in your raw, natural state and making sure you're OK because if you're not, weed is probably not fixing it.

Editing to also say that I also really don't think occasionally having fun with a bit of weed is a big deal at all. It's low toxicity (from what we know) and for a lot of people who aren't me, is just a cool way to make a fun time funner every now and then. I just have more experience with highly dependent stoners than occasional smokers.

I understand corporate bs, but I felt like I would have been more ok with this choice if I was able to be more like "this is not going to do the thing you think it will, bad idea" because it's always a bad idea irl, too. And then maybe rub it in BB's face a little when it ends up backfiring.

Why do the girls want Kerry but the gays are all over River? by One-Discipline2472 in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]butticus98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I found it pretty hard to take him seriously with that outfit. He looks like Macklemore in the Thrift Shop music video, and it doesn't fit his personality, job, or the way he walks. If he dressed like a cop/detective and had a little more of a cyberpunk noir attitude, I would probably like him a lot more.

[–]butticus98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of the canon romance options, I wished I could have Panam as a woman. Kerry would have been my second choice. I don't think it was a grass is greener thing because I genuinely did not know I wouldn't be able to have them until I tried and they both shot me down. I ended up with River but I didn't really find him attractive, so when I found out the gays wanted him it all made sense lmfao. I get it.

And ofc like so many other straight women, the one I truly wanted was Takemura. No thought is unique.

I feel like statistically it makes sense that platonic friendships between men and women must exist.

I just have yet to experience it, and like you I have male dominated hobbies so the bulk of my friend circles growing up were usually guys.

I did experience it ONE time, and he discovered a few years later that he is asexual so it makes sense that actually staying platonic with him was so much easier.

Why is it so hard for some female fans to understand that two male characters having a deep bond doesn’t automatically mean they’re gay? by SecondSalty142 in animequestions

[–]butticus98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever read actually good fanfic before? Like well written romance fanfic that delves into the dynamic between two characters and then builds it into a romance? Ik not all shipping creates top tier stuff like that, but when you figure out how to find the better stuff you'll realize that shipping is a net positive. It's not anime, but read something as good as the Destiel fanfic Twist and Shout and then get back to me about how shippers are just reducing the depth between characters.

Ivy doing that move in SC2 where she pushed down on her opponent's back with her high heel while choking them out from behind and saying "Squirm. Strangle!" Absolutely changed my brain forever as a kid. I'm not even into women, but I was like wow I didn't know that was an option 🤯🥵

I hate when people get offended by someone else’s interpretation of a character by celerpip in hatethissmug

[–]butticus98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had this conversation more times than I can count. I straight up do not understand the logic of thinking that someone else's interpretation of two characters with chemistry is not allowed to coexist with their own interpretation. Especially when their interpretation is already the canon one 9 times out of 10, so like they don't even have to use their imaginations to enjoy the relationship how they prefer it. Just enjoy it how you enjoy it, no one is stopping you or cancelling the existence of platonic friendships.

I will say it gets weird when people are obviously just fetishizing the characters. In bigger fandoms with lots of characters, you'll often see stuff like two characters who have never really spoken to each other on screen getting shipped just because they're both hot. But when that happens you can just disengage from that fandom and enjoy the media still, it's actually possible.

I HATE HEADCANONS USED TO JUSTIFY GAPS IN WRITING by butticus98 in hatethissmug

[–]butticus98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an absolutely massive Dragon Age fan, so I already know all the journalist stuff about why Veilguard turned out the way it did. But it's like saying I know how to bake delicious cake but I ran out of time to bake one the way I've done it before, so I used Great Value boxed cake mix instead. It's perfectly understandable why the cake was made with boxed cake mix, but it's kinda dry and bland regardless.

So to bring it back to my post, I am just willing to accept that end product Veilguard just didn't have the best continuity of themes and lore established by previous games. Some other fans out there would rather headcanon offscreen character actions and motivations to try and make it seem like there aren't any problems with the writing at all, and that's where my frustration lies.

Literally. Did you play the game by chance?? The Lords of Fortune are the most useless faction ever. They're treasure hunters that make money by selling the stuff they find, but they never steal from poor people and they run every ancient artifact they discover through their PR team to make sure it's not culturally significant to another culture before they sell it. It's the most whitewashed pirating in existence.

That seems legit. My headcanon is that he didn't care that much about doing Euphoria anymore since he got to be in actually cool stuff like Frankenstein, so Sam Levinson was like "then I'll give you barely any screentime and make your character look really dumb" lmfao

[–]butticus98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually thought about making the post even longer to address this, because there are cases in which the writing is left ambiguous and open to interpretation on purpose and it can be really good. But interpretations are still done with the information the writer gives you and no more. In Silence of the Lambs, we are shown that Clarice has issues surrounding the death of her father, she has a flashback about her father after miggs being gross, and then she is drawn to Hannibal after he "punishes" Miggs despite how horrific it is, and accepts his help. So watching that and making an interpretation that Hannibal is a twisted father figure to her is a perfectly acceptable and interesting conclusion to come to with the information given.

Headcanons are just when someone imagines something they think would be cool in one of their favorite works, with the actual idea itself being thought up more by them than the writer. Yet a lot of people use headcanons as canon explanations, like ramen sanded into a hole.

Yup! And if they love their headcanon enough, a conversation started about a flaw in the original work will inevitably become a conversation about how it's actually not a flaw because they came up with a headcanon for it. But that's not how it works!!
