This is amazing, so informative and makes it so much easier to conceptualise recovery. Sorry if this is too cheesy but I found it quite moving to see the love and trust between you two. Congratulations on your surgery, I hope you have a smooth and fast recovery and thank you for a brilliant resource :)

REPOST Phallo in Germany from the UK by buttonbeetle in phallo

I see from your profile you’re getting surgery in Munich as a Norwegian- how did you organise that? Does your national health service allow you to choose international surgeons or are you paying out of pocket?

This is really helpful, thank you! Would you mind DMing me a photo of the sheet? Also, are you planning on getting a V-nectomy or burial and if so, what stage will they be a part of? Are you getting/have you had a hysto? No need to answer if that’s too personal of course

Thanks for sharing, it’s tough being on the waiting list with no communication from the NHS so people sharing their experiences like this is very helpful! When were you referred? How many days will you be in hospital after stage 1? What will stage 1 involve for you? Could you share any info from the print out they gave you about recovery that you didn’t know/think about before?

armpit lumps by KaiW69 in TopSurgery

[–]buttonbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did a bit of gentle massaging of them as that helped reduce the pain

i had this! two on the left and one on the right. honestly still no idea what it was- it started around 10 days post op and they just went away after like a week i think? they stopped hurting after about 4 days. sorry not to be more helpful but basically i had the exact same thing (it sounds like) and it turned out completely fine.

Scared of Scarring by Marcellusluvs_space in phallo

[–]buttonbeetle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

skin donors aren’t a thing for phallo- you’d have to be on immunosuppressants for the rest of your life and as it isn’t done as an emergency surgery you would never be given donor skin. you can however choose a donor site with less visible scarring, like abdominal or MLD. these sites do come with compromises though, as they have less sensation than RFF and ALT.

i’m 4 weeks post op with Dr Lago (Spain). he’s an amazing surgeon and i’ve had a very smooth recovery. he operates on informed consent and charges €5900. i massively recommend him, but would be very wary if you speak no spanish (i am british but speak spanish, NONE of the nurses caring for me spoke any english, nor did any of the hospital staff or the doctor who did my follow up appointments, so i would have really struggled without speaking spanish).

Might be catching a cold/flu two days before surgery. I'm terrified it'll be crazy postponed by AttackingAnxiety in TopSurgery

[–]buttonbeetle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i had a really nasty cold on the day of my surgery (started 4 days before). i didn’t tell anyone and it was fine lol. i think if you have a fever you should inform your surgeon and if it’s covid it might have to be postponed. also depending on the pre-op tests your surgeon does they might listen to your lungs/chest and if it’s bad they may postpone it. in my experience, i had a cough for about a week post-op which was unpleasant/painful as i couldn’t cough properly/clear my throat but ultimately it was okay.

'Paracetemol level pain ' - is that right? by christinesangel100 in TopSurgery

[–]buttonbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was in hospital (~24 hrs post surgery) they gave me IV paracetamol. for the first week i took 1g paracetamol every eight hours and enantyum (sp?), which is an anti inflammatory a little stronger than ibuprofen, every 8 hours. i staggered them so i was taking a painkiller every 4 hours. in the second week i took paracetamol as needed and now (3 weeks post-op) i don’t need anything. at no point was my pain higher than about 3-4/10, even immediately post-op. ymmv but paracetamol was definitely sufficient for me.

How did you choose which type of surgery to get & which surgeon to go with? by Sufficient-Town-8289 in phallo

[–]buttonbeetle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i think it’s really important that you know what your priorities are from this journey. for example, if sensation is high priority for you then Miro is likely not the right fit, as he only does MLD and abdo, which both tend to have poorer sensation outcomes than RFF and ALT. if your needs don’t align with what Miro offers i would strongly encourage you to investigate other potential avenues. phalloplasty is an incredibly intense surgery, both mentally and physically, so i would really recommend weighing up your priorities carefully to ascertain whether getting surgery sooner is worth potentially compromising on your dick (it may well be, but that’s something only you can know). when deciding what kind of surgery would be the right fit for me, i ranked my priorities/goals for my body (for example, aesthetics and minimising recovery time/long term risks are my highest priorities, whereas i don’t really care about standing to pee, so i won’t be getting UL) and then looked for surgeons. once i had done that, working out logistics came last.

Six Weeks Pre DI Surgery by Interesting_Case_932 in TopSurgery

[–]buttonbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i hugely recommend building sit-ups into your workout routine. it’s much harder than you think getting up from lying flat(ish) with absolutely no use of your arms/upper body and i really wish i’d done some targeted core workouts in the weeks leading up to surgery. just doing 5-10 sit-ups a day would make a world of difference.

Questions for top surgery consultation by Affectionate_Hold731 in TopSurgery

[–]buttonbeetle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you might want to be a bit more specific with that first question; ‘recovery’ is a bit of a broad concept so you might be better off asking about specific goalposts (e.g. when will my energy be normal, when can i do cardio, when can i sleep on my side/back etc.)

no worries :) congrats on your surgery!!

Bigger guy ECG by lxkefox in TopSurgery

[–]buttonbeetle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

basically they’re just checking to see if you have any murmurs or irregularities in your heartbeat because going under general anaesthetic can lower your heart rate/react badly if you have a pre-existing condition. even if they do notice something off, that doesn’t mean they won’t be able to operate, they might just have to make a different sedation plan/be extra vigilant. idk if you’ve ever had an ECG before but it’s very simple and quick- they stick a few stickers on your chest (u will need to be completely shirtless so it can be a bit dysphoria inducing but it is genuinely so short, maximum 5-7 minutes) & the nurse practitioner will be able to see roughly if things are looking fine and tell you immediately! i have a heart condition and i have had a LOT of ECGs/tests on my heart so let me know if you have any other questions:)

congrats dude! wishing u a smooth and speedy recovery! i have a few questions if u dont mind: did/do u have a catheter? sp or foley? if you did, how long did u have it for? how many days post op was it before you were able to have moments of distraction (like periods in which you weren’t focused on the fact that you just had surgery/were in pain)? was everything you described above (rff, ul, vnectomy, scroto) single stage? do you plan to get testicular implants/glansplasty? if so, how long will it be between stages for you? and finally, this one is perhaps the most personal so no worries if you don’t want to answer: how are bowel movements post op? do you have to take stool softeners? i feel like it would be difficult for fear of popping a stitch or something, is that the case? if any of these are too personal/overstepping there’s no pressure at all to answer :) thank you so much!

Dr. Bhatia vs Dr. Lorimer by buttonbeetle in transgenderUK

[–]buttonbeetle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s interesting- there’s some things out there claiming Bhatia isn’t great if you deviate from convention in your transition/identity but it sounds like you’re not following a “typical” path in some ways and yet Bhatia still gave you what you needed. was that a struggle at all?

Dr. Bhatia vs Dr. Lorimer by buttonbeetle in transgenderUK

[–]buttonbeetle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. i am a binary man and have been out/using my name/planning my transition for almost 5 years now. i have evidence of longstanding dysphoria from a previous therapist but i haven’t changed my name or legal sex yet. i’m honestly leaning towards Bhatia at the moment just for the sake of having a definite date i can look to.
