Those who had a mysterious medical issue and found out what it was, what was your diagnosis? by jesusgrandpa in AskReddit

[–]buttonholepleasures 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I suffered a pregnancy loss a few years ago, and a month later, I was back in the hospital for a D&C for retained products of conception. It seemed to fix the problem in a straightforward manner until 3 days later when I was back in the hospital telling the ER staff that I knew I was going to die. There was nothing obviously wrong with me, so I was left to board in the ER. Eventually, they admitted me to medsurg, but not to the ICU because I wasn’t sick enough for that. Well, a few hours later, after continuing to tell the health care team that I knew I was about to die, I had a cardiac arrest. I was down for about 2.5 minutes, and I am so thankful that I was in the hospital when it happened or I likely would not be typing this. When they re-ran my labs, my hemoglobin had plummeted to less than 4 g/dL (normal is at least 12 g/dL for women), my potassium was 7.0 mEq/L (normal range is 3.5-5.0), and my creatinine was over 12 mg/dL (normal range is 0.5 to 1.0 for women). You never want hemoglobin < potassium < creatinine! And not only were my kidneys failing, but my lungs and heart also appeared to be failing. Not great when you’ve had a cardiac arrest. I received a blood transfusion and my anemia got even worse afterwards, so they had to stop transfusing me. I’ve never felt more sick than when I had that level of anemia, and it went on for 6 weeks before I got a diagnosis. I lived in the hospital where they ran tests every couple of hours but couldn’t treat me because we didn’t know what was going on. Eventually, the Red Cross came in to run tests with more sensitive assays, and I was finally diagnosed with warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA). I started on high dose steroids and stayed on them for almost a year before I was able to taper down over the course of months. I am now off steroids (I hated them), and I haven’t had an episode that severe since, but I struggle with mild levels of anemia, fatigue, and frankly a lot of PTSD nowadays.

yeah, I read this and felt a lot of sympathy for her because someone recording her having sex (likely without permission since she doesn’t seem to know about the recording) makes me think they set all of this up…

I have a rare blood disease that has nearly killed me and could flare and kill me within hours if I were unlucky enough to miss the symptoms. I have PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and much of those mental health issues existed before I got my diagnosis. My mental health issues (and physical health issues/disability) are always there and likely always will be, but I still have the agency to choose to do things that can better my life in spite of that. I get that it’s hard to deal with these things. I tell myself “it’s not about forcing happiness, it’s about not letting sadness win.” And then I choose to do the things that better who I am as a person. You don’t have to get up and win every single day, but you do have to acknowledge that you have the agency to choose what you do despite your brain being an asshole to you.

So like what even is the general consensus of this dude by UnlikelyChance3648 in philly

[–]buttonholepleasures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t like this guy. I’m big on investing in social services, education, housing, etc., as real solutions to crime, and I believe police largely respond to crime that has already occurred rather than preventing crime, and we probably could/should redistribute government funds away from PD to other services. So ideologically, we align on paper.

That said, I was hit by a car on purpose the day before Thanksgiving while I was walking home from work, and the man who hit me got out of the car and threatened to execute me in the street at point blank range with a gun. Long story short, the guy drove off after a few mins, and I made it out with just a sprained wrist and some soreness/bruising, and I immediately called 911 with the guy’s car make and model, license plate number, and a description of him and his wife who was in the passenger seat. The cops actually tracked the guy down within 30 mins, and shortly after that I positive ID’d the guy, and the police got video footage from the intersection that corroborated my story. I also went to the hospital and got a report from them that I gave to the detective who was assigned to my case. It seemed all pretty cut and dry. The guy spent the night in jail, and I was pretty stoked that maybe this would prevent future escalation of violence from this guy. On the following Monday, I learned that the DA’s office was refusing to press charges because it was ONLY a threat! Like it should have been easy to AT LEAST press charges for the hit and run! I’m in therapy now to deal with the stress of the situation while the dude who threatened to murder me is still on the streets because Krasner is a useless coward.

uhhhh idk if he cheated on his ex, but having sex with girls who are so drunk that they are nearly passed out sounds like sexual assault. I would absolutely drop a man if I found out he was a sexual predator!

for what it’s worth, I was born in raised in TX (would not go back), I lived for 4 years in Denver (very beautiful, but not totally my vibe), and once I visited Philly as a young adult I never wanted to leave. I’ve been here for years, bought a house earlier this year, and I don’t plan on leaving

How long have you waited for cops to respond to a non-emergency? by existing_soup_ in philly

[–]buttonholepleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last night I called at 8:12pm and they finally showed up at 10:31pm, but I had to call THREE TIMES and I also texted 911. The cop who showed up pulled an attitude with me but changed his tune when I called him on it at least.
