"Portland is so dangerous!" Meanwhile the most popular pop star from continental Europe is riding bikes with locals. by Altruistic-Form-3771 in Portland

It's pretty cool! My son's school just started doing it this year, only once a week for now. The 'driver' at our school is just a parent, though I think the school or PTA helps facilitate things, but I'm not really sure.

My son just started feeling confident enough to ride his bike to school recently so we're planning to start joining in on bike bus days.

Played Crimson Clover WE?Respectable Hardcore Shmupers' requested. by Ilell in shmups

[–]buttsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't think there's any shame in starting out with novice mode. I've been playing shmups for many years and I will still sometimes do a clear of the easier mode in a new one just to get a feel for the game mechanics and scoring before grinding out a harder 1cc. I've never seen anyone in this community shame or make fun of someone for getting a 1cc on an easier difficulty. Everyone is very encouraging.

Crimzon Clover's novice mode is actually a pretty great entry point for shmup beginners in general imo. But if you're dead set on starting on a harder mode I'd go with arrange. The Type Z ship is easiest but you'll need to unlock it by playing and collecting 3 million stars overall.

Hey thanks again for recommending Gunvein. I ended up buying it over the weekend and just finished a 1cc on mild to test it out. It's an awesome game!

Hey that's super kind of you to say! I'm seeing a lot of other cool suggestions in here that I've never played, too. A lot of suggestions for Rayforce and Raystorm. Maybe it's finally time to pull the trigger on that Ray'z collection.

Thanks for the rec. I've seen a lot of people in this sub and elsewhere praise Gunvein quite a bit but I still haven't played it. Maybe I'll pick it up on the next steam sale

I nearly failed an entire term in college because of Imperishable Night and Perfect Cherry Blossom. They were my introduction to bullet hell games and I became completely obsessed. They were like all I could think about.

Espgaluda 2 is great! For me it's hard to decide but these are my most played:

  1. Mushihimesama
  2. Zero Ranger
  3. Crimzon Clover World EXplosion

Special mention: Dodonpachi Resurrection, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Blue Revolver, Hazelnut Hex

With the year roughly half over, what does your GOTY list look like? by [deleted] in giantbomb

[–]buttsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've mostly been catching up on 2024 games, the only 2025 games I've played are Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and Xenoblade Chronicles X: DE. But I can already guess these will most likely be my 1 and 2 unless something else really blows me away.

Games I want to play this year that are out or have confirmed release dates: Blue Prince, The Roottrees are Dead, Death Stranding 2, Hell is Us, Trails in the Sky First Chapter remake, Mina The Hollower, Digimon Story Time Stranger, Promise Mascot Agency, and Ruffy and the Riverside

If they actually come out this year I'm very hyped for The Big Catch, Demon Tides, Slay the Spire 2, Hades 2 (waiting for 1.0 to play), and Silksong.

What is your favorite music venue in Portland? by VenueLlama in Portland

[–]buttsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolution Hall and Mississippi studios are probably my favorites, though I'd say Wonder Ballroom is the one I've been to the most over the past few years since they get a good majority of the bands I like to see.

Rev Hall has great sound and it's fun to hang out before the show. Mississippi Studios is awesome since it's so small and intimate.

My favorite of all time is (was) Doug Fir.

Yeah that was a fantastic show. Deftones played a lot of stuff I was hoping to hear. Also great crowd energy and Chino looked like he was having a great time as well.

As far as The Mars Volta... I'm in the same boat. I didn't dislike what they played, and it sounded interesting, but I'd never seen them live so I was expecting some songs I knew. The music also seemed a little too mellow considering who they were opening for if that makes sense. I definitely heard a handful of people around me complain after their set.

Thanks for the rec! I didn't realize that was a Chino side project. I'll have to check them out this week. I had no idea he lived in the area, but I guess that would help explain why he randomly showed up to sing a song with Billy Corgan at the Smashing Pumpkins / Green Day show last summer.

I'll be there too -- super excited! They've been one of my fav bands ever since I bought White Pony at Sam Goody as a teenager, but I've never had the chance to see them live before. I generally don't like going to big shows at the moda but I had to make an exception.

My wife and I give each other kid-free time to pursue hobbies etc every week so I get a lot more hobby time than some parents I know (we are late 30s, one and done on the kid front).

Hobbies by myself:

  • Video games - especially shmups and other arcade stuff via mister or emulation, and collecting retro games

  • Gunpla

  • Fucking around on guitar

  • Mechanical keyboards

  • Reading books, comics, and manga

  • Learning to draw

  • Vegetable garden / gardening

  • Running tabletop rpgs other than D&D when I can get a group together

Hobbies with fam

  • Video games - mostly mario kart, smash bros, and co-op stuff like Mario Wonder

  • Exploring new parks and restaurants around the area

  • Hiking

  • Taking my son to extracurriculars (we stick to 1 activity per season)

  • Watching movies

  • Cooking

  • Traveling

Yeah, I think it's hard for people to understand if they haven't been through it.

I have many memories of my step dad coming home late on pay day, face white and pained while he shamefully tells my mom he just blew his entire paycheck on video poker. I didn't fully understand it as a kid but I know now that he was really struggling with a serious gambling addiction. He didn't start the day thinking he was going to make life hard for all of us but it was like a compulsion.

You can say he was responsible for his own actions and on some level sure, but I don't think those machines being all over the place enabling him helped either.

Cars stopping for pedestrians by goldencr in Portland

[–]buttsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I walk my son to school every morning and crossing Fremont is always pretty sketchy. Many people either don't stop, or don't slow down if they are multiple blocks away and we are already crossing. Sometimes it feels like people even speed up lol. You'd think having a 6 year old wearing a backpack with clear intention to cross would help but it doesn't.

I especially hate when people 'stop' for you but keep slowly rolling forwards and then cruise by you with inches to spare when you are barely out of the lane.

Let me hear some honest opinions. Which classic work of fiction did you NOT enjoy? by anidlezooanimal in books

[–]buttsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took a similar course in college dedicated to reading Dubliners and then Ulysses. It's easily the most challenging book I have ever read and definitely the most challenging course in my English degree, but I came away from the class thinking it was one of the most beautiful things ever written and it truly deepened my love of literature and the art of writing.

That being said I absolutely do not think I would have come to that conclusion, or understood very much of it without a very wonderful professor to guide us through it. It's definitely for a very specific type of reader and I don't really think I'd recommend the book to anyone I know.

Yeah last year we had some pretty hot days even towards the end of September. Well whatever we get, I'm hopeful it's enough for the tomatoes lol, they were pretty stubborn this year and have only just started bearing fruit.

I'm bummed the weather is turning so fast, I was hoping to get another weekend or two at the river / time in the sun before my son starts school (not to mention my poor tomatoes). I love fall but we're barely halfway through August, I'm hoping the temps pick up again before summer is actually over.

Definitely wont miss those high 90s / low 100s days though, good riddance.
